How can a Non-binary person be lesbian?

Someone on another website said they were Non-binary and lesbian. I didn't think much about until now. Lesbian mean a female attracted to another female, but if you're Non-binary you don't have a gender. So how can you be lesbian?

  • Well specifically speaking there is a difference between sex and gender.
Gender refers to the attitudes, feelings, and behaviors that a culture associates with a person's biological sex, according to the American Psychological Association. In other words, gender is a social construct and social identity.
Sex describes the biological sex a person was assigned at birth. It's based on biological characteristics of maleness or femaleness as indicated by chromosomes, gonads, hormones and genitals.
Gender identity is a component of gender that describes a person's psychological sense of their gender.
"Many people describe gender identity as a deeply felt, inherent sense of being a boy, a man, or male; a girl, a woman, or female; or a nonbinary gender (e. g., genderqueer, gender-nonconforming, gender-neutral, agender, gender-fluid) that may or may not correspond to a person's sex assigned at birth, presumed gender based on sex assignment, or primary or secondary sex characteristics," the American Psychological Association described.
People identify as transgender when their gender identity, expression and/or role doesn't align with what has culturally been associated with their sex assigned at birth. Those who do identify with the gender that's in accordance with cultural associations are called "cisgender," as described by the American Psychological Association.

So if we are talking technically speaking, No. No they can't, because you are neither male or female. You are simply a person. Non-binary people however, can identify as a non-binary bisexual or non-binary pansexual as it isn't JUST one gender.

Lesbianism refers to WLW (Women loving women) and to say your a bi lesbian, pan lesbian, or non-binary lesbian is not exactly right. It disregards all the other labels.

Pansexuality refers to loving someone regardless of their sex OR gender.
Bisexuality refers to loving both men and women (bi=2)
    lesbianism refers to WLW

    Hope this helps!

    • Yes this does help, thank you

  • Because when they say that, they are just trying to get attention, they want to feel special so they make up all of this crap (which is why its contradictory, like gender is a social construct and that's why we have seventy two genders and transgender people feel like the opposite gender (all of which contradicts the other statements). So yeah,, that's why they say that, its not that its true, only that it gets them the attention they crave.

  • Im fed up with this non binary crap. If ur a penis, you're male. A vagina then female. You can call yourself either for varying reasons but its a pile of crap to claim you're neither.

    • I agree

  • Some people determine sexuality by the genitals involved. Because genitals are kinda the main deal with sex

  • Theyre an idiot. This non binary is idiocity at its height. Narcassitic (spelling) fools

  • That's a bullshit. Non binary means either he's a male or female

  • Non-binary means "Hey! Look at me!" So she can still be a lesbian since she is actually a woman. Reality doesn't care about our feelings.

  • She's a tomboy; but doesn't like that label.
