How can I tell if my guy friend had a boner?

So me and my guy friend are super close, and completely platonic, but we love to cuddle and get close to each other. Last night, after we had been drinking and smoking a bit, he started getting super touchy. He was feeling my boobs, trying to take my pants off, rubbing my neck, etc.. then we finally went to his bed to lay down and watch some tv. Out of nowhere he turned over, pulled me up toward him and we began cuddling face-to-face. We did this for about 5 minutes then he sleepily rolled over to lay on his back. I noticed he had a very hard, sharp, pointy-looking bulge in the front center of his sweats which the fabric looked tight around. It stood up a couple inches away from his body. I thought it might be an erection, but I always heard erections typically lay down on a guys thigh and look more like a stick, but the bulge he had looked MUCH different from his usual soft, slight bulges.
