When I was a teen most everyone in the school was having sex by 14..
The moment we hit high school, it was like a rat race, everyone trying to do adult things, sex being at the top of the list. Sex seemed so normalized back then, like it was just accepted from our point of view (as teens in the 80's).
There's more shaming now I guess, so less people are doing it maybe, I don't know.

I went to an all-boys high school, so nothing like that happened in school. After school, though, juniors and seniors (they were allowed to drive with parents' permission) headed off to the all-girls high schools... lots of things happened then, typically in the car or back at home before the parents get home from work.
We had dances at our high school, and the parking lot was often very busy with steamed up windows. Although I must say, there was probably more drug use than sex.

I could have had it with 17 different girls in high school. all of them made it pretty clear but your boy was dense af and shy.
