I've also heard kitty, and coochie, but generally it is pussy and I don't know why. It doesn't seem to make any sense.
It makes no sense to me, although the word conjures cuteness and does has a soft sound. But how does a vulva actually compare to a cat? Maybe because it responds to being petted? LOL
Anyway, here are some things that I found:
"There appear to be a number of theories as to why the slang for the vagina (or perhaps more precisely, the vulva) is pussy. The most common derivation that I see in dictionaries and other resources is that it can be traced back to the Old Norse puss meaning "pouch" or "pocket". In that sense, it is not unlike the etymology of vagina which itself comes from the Latin vagina meaning "sheath" or "scabbard"."According to Michael Sims, Old English had the word pusa or posa for "bag" and by the 1660s, English saw the use of pusse to signify the vagina. Etymonline believes the term to have likely been adopted for general use only in the 19th-century. The same resource also offers an alternative theory for the word's origins:
"but perhaps instead from the cat word on notion of "soft, warm, furry thing;" compare French le chat, which also has a double meaning, feline and genital.
In other words, "soft, warm, furry thing" = pussy? It also became a term of endearment for girls, women, and even effeminate men. Kitty, as another synonym for the vagina, probably came about from pussy. Interestingly, warm and furry is not the only association made between cats and women. The word puss has both positive and negative connotations."
"As pornographic films permeated society, so too did pussy, this time deployed as a "pretty" word used by men in porn to describe female genitalia. Language is constantly evolving—that’s how it survives—so it’s par for the course that pussy would change meaning over time."
"As a term for a girl or woman from 1580s (also used of effeminate men), and applied childishly to anything soft and furry."Cat - 1520s, but probably much older than the record, perhaps imitative of the hissing sound commonly used to get a cat's attention or the noise made by the cat in hissing. The same or similar sound is a conventional name for a cat in Germanic languages and as far off as Afghanistan; it is the root of the principal word for "cat" in Rumanian (pisica) and secondary words in Lithuanian (puž, word used for calling a cat), Low German (puus), Swedish dialect katte-pus, Irish puisin "a kitten," etc.
"Applied to a girl or woman from c. 1600, originally in a negative sense, implying unpleasant cat-like qualities, but by mid-19c. in affectionate use.
"Slang for female pudenda by 1879, but probably older; perhaps from Old Norse puss "pocket, pouch" (compare Low German puse "vulva"). Compare French le chat, which also has a double meaning, feline and genital. Earlier uses are difficult to distinguish from pussy. Perhaps it came to mean "soft, warm, furry thing".0 0 0 0

I had to google it because I love science 🤣.. And this came up..." Pussy as a slang term for the female pudenda is thought to derive ultimately from Low German puse "vulva" or Old Norse puss "pocket, pouch". It didn't arise in English with a sexual meaning until the 19th century, but prior to that it had been used to refer to women in general (16th century). "

some famous writer dude from the 19th century thought human pussy looked and felt a lot a lot like cat pussy (by the way he got this idea from his pet cat... ). so in one his novels when he wrote a sex scene he described a woman's pussy as a pussy and used feline adjectives throughout his new novel. after it was released people started using pussy for pussy and comparing women to cats
0 1 0 0also he wasn't actually the first one to compare women and cats like that but he's the one who popularized it apparently
I was always told that it is derived from old words for pocket or sheath.

0 1 0 0I don’t remember the origin but I’ll get back to you when I re-read over it 🤣
0 1 0 0It's often hard to find the exact origin of words. One possible origin of pussy is from Old French pousser "to push", which describes what a man does during intercourse.
0 0 0 0*Pussy is not the label for Vagina. It it is the label for the entire region, Vulva.
*Pussy is derived from French and Middle German; words for Pocket or Purse.0 0 1 0A Makes about as much sense as calling it a beaver. How did that one come about?
0 0 0 0No idea but I like the name
0 0 0 0Maybe it’s a comparison to dogs? The penis has been often referred to as a “wiener” in the past. That would be very dumb and immature, but since when are private part nicknames not dumb and immature? lol
