@Browneye57 Maybe I misunderstood the question. Your reply is true for people IN A RELATIONSHIP. After 13 happy years with my partner, I don't worry about how to "prove my love". I just enjoy doing the little things that make her happy, like putting fresh flowers on the table when she is coming back from a trip. The asker wrote "Whenever I have a crush on a guy..." so I thought she was asking about attracting a man's attention.
Perhaps I did as well. She doesn't want to appear 'crazy'. Well, too many tend to hide their true feelings, or feign the 'hard to get thing', which tends to lead a guy into thinking they lack interest. Lots of women lose out this way. When I had a new fling, there was NEVER any doubt about my interest. And yeah, been with wifey ver 2.0 for thirty years. We don't do the flowers thing anymore, "Oh, you brought me dead blooms again?" When I feel that a girl is in love with me, she wants to be with me much of her free time. She wants to plan things together. She doesn't need to be entertained with dates; she is content with coming to my home and watching TV, preparing a meal together. When a girl is in love with me, she wants me to meet her friends and family. She wants her co-workers to meet me. It sounds to me like a trust issue he has. It should be enough for him that you say it. If he doesn't trust you then no matter what you do, he will still have the same issues.

I would take them at their word, they clearly recognise that they have made choices in their life which do not lend themselves to being good partners etc, it hurts them and they want you to have a better life than that. You should persue that better life.
By caring genuine concern and care for him, doing things which noone else could do for him.

I think the big thing is to find out what actions he sees as a display of affection. Like you know how there's that whole 5 love languages thing? Words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, acts of service, and receiving gifts?
Find out which is how how normally displays his affection and then find a way to mirror that back. People tend to give love in the same way they want to receive love
