Herpes is not really a big deal at all, I don't know what people make such a fuss about there are so many people in the world that have it and don't even realise.

I guess it's mostly through lack of education.
There are two main types of herpes HSV-1 and HSV-2, HSV-1 is the typical cold sore on the lip and is often referred to as oral herpes, as it stands approx 3.7 billion people have HSV-1. HSV-2 is classified as an STD and is often called genital Herpes but can be transmitted in other ways and currently approximately half a billion people have it. Herpes can be transmitted by skin to skin contact.

Ever had a cold sore, yep, you've got herpes.

I don't have it, but it's not the end of the world if I was to get it.
Almost all people live with it, without any problem at all. Some people may need a little medication when they have a flare up, other than that it doesn't affect you at all unless you are immunocompromised.
