How do you typically feel about rape scenes in movies/TV?

I found "I Spit On Your Grave" very difficult to watch. Somebody said in a comment on my other poll (vote here if you haven't) that they're sexually aroused by rape scenes. It was a pink account but looking at her profile, I am skeptical that she isn't either fake or a troll.

I'm also going to add in poll options about sadistic pleasure because a movie critic Roger Ebert said that when he was in the theatre of ISOYG, he heard some people cheering during the rape scenes.

  • I feel negatively about anything related to rape, or forced sexual activity.
I think it is because I have a 19 y/o daughter who is very attractive and petite. And she is away in college.
I sent her some bear repellent and pepper spray the other day. haha

If I didn't have a daughter, I guess it would just be part of the movie. But I wouldn't like it. I'm very into making sure there is mutual attraction and permission before making moves on a woman.

  • Generally, I feel: uncomfortable, angry, upset, repelled.
I remember one exception from watching 'A Clockwork Orange' - where it was more like intellectual interest on my side.

  • Shit is hard for me to watch.. I don't like to see people scared and in pain... Well... More so women... Dudes not so much..! But I have to add to my answer..! If a lover wanted to rape roll play (some girls have expressed interest) I would totally be down... It turns me on too... But more so cause its a fantasy or desire she has, and I really like to please my lover, so if it's something that she likes then it turns me on to do it for her

  • After you had mentioned this movie a few times I decided to watch it. And yes I Spit on your Grave was very disturbing. As a rape survivor it hit some pretty hard feelings. But it's also a very important conversation to have, to ignore it is to give tacit permission for it. To actually look at the dirty details is sometimes necessary to actually sympathize with the victim. And just a survivor gets all caught up in desire-fear response it's natural for us to face that part of ourselves as well. It is estimated that one in three people would commit rape if they thought that they could get away with it (I know that most times you hear one in three MEN but when women are asked the same questions in the same way they give similar responses but this is ignored in the general statistic). So it's not surprising that many people are aroused by the depiction of these acts.

  • Depends how its portrayed, but usually its uncomfortable to watch; occasionally its arousing.

  • try Irréversible 😂 the pinnacle of French cinema

  • They bother me honestly, especially after being through rape when I was younger

  • That movie is so bad.

  • Netflix series13 reasons why talks about this issue among teenagers

  • Once again I don't understand how someone can be aroused by a girl with a flat butt.

  • They're hard to watch

  • I looked up the video and watched enough to say it makes me cringe.

  • I feel bothered by those scenes, but that's the point of these movies in the horror genre. The scene in "The Hills Have Eyes" bothered me also... But that's the point of the scene.

  • I've never seen any of those movies, and I wasn't aware that they were about rape. I probably wouldn't watch something like that. If a scene like that came on in a show I was watching then I would change the channel.

    • Also, that's really f'ed up that people cheered. If I was the theater manager I would have had them removed.

  • I feel a combo of indifferent and aroused. Rape scenes are usually there to be a constructive part of the narrative.
I'm the case of a horror film like I spit on your grave, it's crucial. It adds both titillation and purpose to the movie.
You want her to get revenge but you are not sorry for seeing a bit of skin. It's just a movie after all.

Now, if it was video of an ACTUAL rape then I would think what the shit and not be aroused. I would be disturbed by it.

    • "you are not sorry for seeing a bit of skin" It's not the nudity, but her suffering that was disturbing.

    • Yeah but that is the point of the movie. Why would she go and murder everyone if that doesn't happen? It's a fake movie and we know she isn't really getting raped and tortured or whatever. In the sequels I spit on your grave 2 and 3 or however many they are up to now. You are not just wondering what does she do but what else happens to her? It's enticing. Know what I mean?

  • Don't like rape scenes. Never have. Other than that, I love sex and nudity in movies, especially when it is natural like in many foreign films. I should add that there is rape scene of sorts in the movie "the Beast" where an animal rapes a woman, but it is more comical than violent. That scene doesn't bother me.

  • I’ve never seen any because I stay away from the kinds of movies that would have them.

  • Rape, Sex, Torture I don't watch at all. I turn off the TV or busy myself with my phone. I feel very uncomfortable and grossed out.

  • Honestly it's a good look into the human I. D. The subconscious mind of a human. Don't mind the frame of the movie to a degree that yes it is not appealing but compared to other actions regarding real life is nothing in comparison.

Look at war for example, you think women get off scotts free? No... this movie does not even come close. It helps to open your eye's to these things so you know when red lights can go off.

  • I don't watch them.
