In one word? Amazing.
In a primarily male-dominated industry, it’s a very empowering feeling to walk into a gym and impress guys with how much you can lift. I usually am the only woman in my gym working with weights (the rest chat on the cardio machines), and the amount of respect I get simply for being a woman lifting weights is amazing. I put a lot of time into it and it is truly my life’s passion.
In a given day, I get positive and negative comments for what I do from both genders. Many are of admiration, like “you’re so strong” or “wow, you are so determined!”, but some people also don’t understand the dedication it takes and the specific “bigger” look I may be going for. For example, I get a lot of “don’t get too big” and “you look like a man!”.
Negative comments aside, being a female bodybuilder has given me so much. Not only in making me look intimidating and badass, but in giving me the confidence and strength internally with my own struggles/obstacles. I’m no longer insecure or afraid of what others think of me. I can handle any challenge. At the end of the day, it’s my life, not theirs
