How old were you when you found out that D isn't a large bra size?

  • You consider D cups small or something? Shit I remember when I was 9 years old and wore a woman's B cup size and that seemed big to me then because I was the only kid In my class that had to wear a bra. now in my 30's I am wearing a 42 DD and let me tell you, it ain't a cute and dainty B cup and most of the sizes and colors are limited and it is a real pain in the ass trying them on because different vendors and brands have different cuts and sizes that run either on the bigger side or smaller side and the only way to find out if it's going to cover my girls and not cut off my circulation and fit properly around my torso and the cups are deep enough is to try it on. There's been many times I grabbed a bra that was in my size because I liked the color/fabric/lace only to buy it and take it home and try it and it was too tight or I was spilling out of the cups (I hate the way that looks in my clothes) bra shopping is not fun.

    • Hey there! I don't exactly 'consider' them small. I worded my title quite bluntly for the purpose of starting conversations, but my point is, on the most common band sizes, a properly fitted D/DD bra is a small-average size. Cup sizes look different on different band sizes, so a DD on a 30 band is quite small whereas a DD on a 42 band as you have explained is on the larger side. 'DD' means a bust measurement that is 5" larger than underbust measurement. This is about 2.5 inches of projection per boob (does this sound like you?). If your underbust measures 42 inches and your bust measures 47 inches (5 inch difference), you're a 42DD. However, if you're having so much trouble bra shopping, there's a chance you might actually need a different size. I highly recommend the 'abrathatfits' calculator, it changed my life! All my life I thought I had to go into bra stores to get fitted, turns out they gave me the wrong size all along and we are more than capable of measuring ourselves.

    • Wow! Thank you so much for this information. I've never heard of this app but I definitely want to give it a try. Anything to take the strife out of bra shopping would be great 😊 thanks again

    • You're very welcome! 💗 They have their own size calculator but also their own subreddit if you want to learn more!

  • I never thought it was. Wtf

    • Good :) A lot of people think A = tiny, B = small, C = average, D = large, DD = very large and DD+ = massive but this isn't the case at all.

    • I've never heard anyone say they thought that but okay dude.

    • Good :) People must have a good idea of bra sizing where you are :)

  • It depends on what measurements system you are using.
In the UK it's getting that way. I find a ,, C,, cup big enough...

    • No, it doesn't, no matter what system you're using, D = a bust measurement that is 4" larger than the person's band measurement. And C is actually quite small.

    • But 4ins is quite a lot. when you like small boobs. My boobs are ,, C,, for a guy they are big. I would love,, D,, but they are too big for me..

    • It's not really, it's two inches of projection per boob.

  • I guess I found out when first discussing and trying to understand bra sizes with my mum. I think I would’ve been about eight or nine.

  • I was apparently 19

  • Wait it's not? Well, I was today year's old?

    • Yep, it's not. On the smallest band sizes D is actually very small. On medium band sizes D is in the small-average range. It can be large on the largest band sizes but for the most part it is a small-average size, but most people who need to wear a D cup bra are wearing way smaller because they think D cups are only for big boobs.

    • Really that's interesting.

    • It's very interesting! Just to put things into perspective, I have very small boobs and I thought I was a 32A (because Victoria's Secret said I was) but I'm actually a 26E. People think E is huge but it can be small too. 26E and 28E are small sizes, 30E, 32E, 34E, 36E, 38E are pretty average and E begins to look large on band sizes of 40+.

  • Bruh I thought D was really big, it looks it

    • Nope, D cup bras are more in the small-average range and can even be really small on smaller band sizes. The reason you thought it was really big is because society has a very narrow, closed idea of bra sizing. The idea that A = tiny, B = small, C = average, D = large, DD = very large and DD+ = massive is totally incorrect. Because of this societal perception (AND the fact that stores purposely size people wrong in order to sell more products) most girls who wear D or DD bras actually need G or H, and most girls who wear B or C cup bras need DD-F.

  • Mid teens. Really depends on the measuring system I guess? It's different for different countries I think. And different brands sometimes. Most of the bras I wear are labeled a C cup, but some of them are a D cup. And I once got my measurement takes by a professional bra company and the size was a weird sizing, way higher than D. Bra measuring systems are odd.

    • Well, the US and UK systems are virtually the same except when you get to a UK E that becomes a US DDD (so the names of the cup sizes changes after that), but that's the only way in which they differ. Which ever system you use, a C denotes a bust measurement that is 3" more than the person's band measurement (1.5 inches of projection per boob - quite small - people think C means average/medium usually but this is not true), and D denotes a bust measurement of 4" more than band measurement (still quite small, 2" of projection per boob, yet people talk about 'D cups' as if they're very big!) As for different brands, yes, the measurements of sizes do deviate slightly from brand to brand but what's more alarming, and what you must be careful of, is a lot of the top lingerie brands use incorrect sizing methods in their size guides and size people wrong purposely to sell more bras from a narrow size range - thus profiting more. If a size guide tells you to measure your band size and add 4/5 inches to it - it's wrong.

  • Troll hard there anon.
Don't try to tell me 38 D is small.
You carry them for a day then tell me how small they are.

    • No trolling here on my part! A properly fitted 38D is not large. I would suggest looking into the abrathatfits calculator

    • I won't waste my time arguing with you.

    • Good, because it definitely would be a waste of time when you're wrong

  • On tiny girls it looks big but yeah not that big when its proportionate looking just looks average

    • Which makes sense

    • Not quite! It looks small on girls with small band sizes, and average on girls with larger band sizes. D means that there is a 4" difference between band and bust measurement, so only about 2" of projection per boob. Therefore D is pretty much always a small-average size, never big.

    • I meam its not that big but I wouldn't call it small
