How should I stop watching porn?

It's a habit that happens at least once everyday but I don't want to watch it anymore. Does anyone have an idea for getting it out of my life?

  • Yes. I have a few ideas. This will be lengthy, so please be patient.

If you have any physical materials, destroy them in some symbolic way; don't just throw them in the trash, but smash them with a hammer or burn them. Delete anything saved on your phone or computer and empty your trash bin. Reformat your hard drive, unsubscribe from email lists, clear your search history, whatever you have to do. That way if you're Googling something legitimate, a website or name won't show up.

Live a more balanced and disciplined lifestyle. Go to bed an hour or so earlier. Spend less time on your phone, computer, social media, anything that can lead you into temptations. Turn your devices off for some time before you go to bed. Keep them in a different room or at least out of arm's length.

As much as possible, avoid anything triggering. Inventory your movies, music, and TV shows and avoid those with sexual or suggestive content, or even immodest dress. Take a different route to work or school so that you don't pass by the apparel store. If you're browsing the web or if you're watching TV and an ad comes up, refresh the page or change the station (if possible).

I'll advise against simply finding other things to watch because you can still come across provocative and immodest images. That and your mind can be idle and bored, which can leave you vulnerable to a relapse.

Don't use slang terms for the most intimate parts of our bodies. This might not seem significant, but it really is because you elevate the body to greater propriety. Don’t describe women as “hot”, “sexy”, or even the seemingly more innocent "cute", but use more wholesome, affectionate, and humanizing terms like “pretty”, “beautiful”, “graceful”, or “elegant”; words that appreciate the heart of a woman rather than just her body.

Deny yourself in some way, so take cold showers or eat only two slices of bread at mealtime. This should be done regularly and with intention (meaning weekly and on the same day) because if you wait until after a relapse, it becomes a punishment more than a discipline. You’ll also be able mentally prepare yourself.

On that note, have an accountability partner, someone you can share frustrations or struggles with and who can give you advice.

Lastly, practice humility and gratitude. You can't change the evil that you face, but you can change yourself and how you face it. Humility allows you the freedom to grow, to acknowledge and safeguard vulnerabilities, and to accept responsibility so that you can make the changes.

Be thankful for every day of freedom from pornography, whether it’s one day or a thousand. Gratitude helps you to acknowledge steps taken and gives you hope for the future. It's is a solid defense against the negativity, loneliness, despair, and anxiety that causes one to seek relief in things like pornography.

  • It's a habit where your brain only consumes stuff and rewards you for it.
Find something else for your brain to consume or do something productive. It gives you the same feeling.

    • Alright, thank you. I'll try that instead
