Honestly, it sounds to me like this guy is just trying to manipulate you/gaslight you. He's making you question yourself and making you WANT to find a way to please him even if you didn't necessarily care about doing so before. He's putting himself in control of your happiness, which gives him all the power.
Based on your update, he is DEFINITELY manipulating you.
But why
Because being able to manipulate you gives him power over you. He can get you to do whatever he wants. And maybe what he wants is stuff you'd be happy to do anyway, but maybe it's stuff you'd never do otherwise, but he's got you so twisted up that you'll do them for him to keep him happy. This is a common way that women end up abused or even "turned out" as prostitutes or drug mules. Those may be on the more extreme side of things, but they still happen every day. Even if his goals are much more "mild", he's still manipulating you and trying to mind-fuck you into complying for him without question - and there's some real danger there.
