My ex was attracted to curly haired short girls with nicely shaped butts and big chests. I know this bc of the porn that he was watching. I have straight hair, a very small chest, and a big butt (with hip dips so my butt isn’t that round or bubbly). He said I was one of the prettiest girls he had ever seen and that he lost his breath when he saw me, but part of me feels like we didn’t work out bc i wasn’t his type. So If a man has a specific type, why do they go for the opposite?

Because men's "types" aren't like women's: they're a bonus, not a requirement.

Remember that humans are animals, and evolved based on the same reactions to pressures. Male selection pressure, up until quite recently, was ENORMOUSLY higher than women's- about 80% of our ancestors, going back to the dawn of the species, are female- and so it made no sense for a man to be so picky that he'd turn a woman down for sex based on a minor imperfection; he might never get another chance.

Women, meanwhile, were in a far safer (physically, at least) position, but competing with one another for an ever-diminishing pool of men. If they're all struggling against each other for the highest-status male, or the one with the biggest muscles, or whatever category is deemed most attractive, then that society is going to degenerate into a bloodbath, and fall apart.
