If Fifty Shades would have been about a carpenter & nice guy who was a good husband, father and loved dogs, would it have sold 150 million copies?

I was talking to a friend on here, and we kind of got into this topic. I hope you can offer your thoughts. This is NOT about gender bashing, it's more about how life is complicated. His question was about who you masturbate to in your fantasies. I gave him my answer. He was my ex. He was not husband material by any stretch of the imagination, but nevertheless, that was my answer. In the everyday world, vanilla is great. But in my dreams, I'm at Baskin-Robbins. lol

Do nice guys finish last? Sometimes.

Do bad boys finish last? Sometimes.

  • As someone that's seen the demand for "bad boys" in the romantic fiction industry, I can say that book with the man you presented would definitely make a decent paperback book, but it would be the Hallmark movie equivalent of any kind of romance novel. It would be cute and a nice little thing for a preacher's wife, but a lot of the romance genre revolves around the idea of fantasy and what that means for different people.

The reason 50 Shades sold so well, despite being so toxic, is because of the fantasy it presents. I read TONS of books full of things I would never do just because I enjoy the fantasy of it, there are lots of women that entertain submissive fantasies with no intentions of going through with them. It's not about the fact that it's a 20-something virgin being abused by a bad dom, it's because it's a girl being brought into a new understanding of sex at the same time as the reader with someone who she repeatedly tells the reader she feels safe with. It's about the fantasy of being submissive in a safe environment with a loving and caring dom even though they have no desire to do anything like that. It's sexual exploration for a lot of people, especially women in their 30's and 40's who are most likely married and experiencing sexual stagnation in their monogamous relationships.

Romance novels know that it's not about creating a realistic good man, it's about creating a fantasy environment and letting the reader live through the eyes of your protagonist. If you can give them something good, the book will do well. It might be a little trashy, sure, but it's always fun for the right person.

    • Why do you say it was toxic? The entire BDSM world says it was way too vanilla.

  • Honestly I can’t believe it even sold that much. It’s a very vanilla movie and very overrated. Not actual representation of BDSM , but it actually goes to show how much sex does sell

    • Did you read the question?

    • Yep and I still stand with what I said. Awful movie

  • If he'd still been a mysterious billionaire into BDSM (assuming the guy from the book is a billionaire; I haven't read it), then possibly. Probably not, though.

A big part of the allure of fantasy is that it's something you haven't done; familiarity doesn't actually breed contempt, but it DOES kill novelty. Once you actually try out the things you've been idealizing in your head and genitals, you may still love them, but they became just another part of your sexual repertoire.

It's hard to maintain an air of mystery around your husband; I think the only reliable route is anterograde amnesia. A book about a woman with that, who has the novelty of constantly rediscovering her husband, might sell, but it's not the kind of thing you'd get millions of women eagerly masturbating to.

    • Just watch the movie. The premise is pretty dumb. A handsome billionaire lures a long lady into his world. lol How hard could that be? lol If they wanted to make a much better book/movie, then take away the money part. But my question isn't about the movie. When you dream/fantasize at night, do you imagine yourself at the grocery store, or at the Playboy mansion? I was just telling the guy that our fantasies don't align themselves with what we want in reality. If Fifty Shades was about a guy mowing the lawn, no one would buy it.

    • young lady, not long. lol

  • No. The guy would be sued with sexual harassment and rape and go to prison.

The difference between a bad boy and a bad guy is that one of them is way hotter than the other. They would be doing the exact same thing but one of them got punched in the nuts while the other turns on the sexy time.

Women judge how "hot" a guy is based on his social status, his ability to command respect and indications of success as well as beauty.

    • Great answer. The movie was really stupid. (I never read the books)

What Girls & Guys Said

  • Lady chatterleys lover was about a game keeper and it did pretty well.

  • Never saw them but I heard they weren't raunchy enough compared to the books?

    • No them, just one.

  • Some romances are about nice guys. But they’re usually not the sexy ones.

    • This question is about your personal fantasies.

    • Oh. That’s not what it said. Anyway, I’m gonna keep those private, especially in public.

    • The trick is to always read the description as well as the title.

  • Only if the carpenter nice guy occasionally walled up random girls.

  • That's why it's fantasy.

  • People like to fantasize about things that are out of their control, taboo or things that they won't be doing in the real world.

thats why we even watch tvs shows that have nothing but violence, explicit and drama

    • You get the meaning.

  • It wouldn't have done as well to be honest because people naturally want the fruit that's higher up and hard to get. Sex sells hard at the end of the day and people love drama/toxicity along with it aha

    • My aunt used to constantly read romance novels. I asked my cousin what's in those novels. He told me that they're always about a plain-looking, frumpy librarian that's holding out for the Adonis who rides in on a white horse, and sees something within her that no other man, can see. lol

    • Haha, every girl's dream right? It's also true. Mysteriousness and strength

  • Not a chance. The popularity of this book really showed the true nature of women.

  • Depends how cute the dogs were.

  • fuck no lol

    • So far the best answer. People are trying to define the definition of BDSM. They completely lost the point, even though I described it in the details. My all time favorite movie is Ocean's Eleven. In real life I don't like criminals. But when I'm on the coach in my jamies and eating popcorn, the last thing I want to watch is a show/movie about boring reality. Don't we live and breathe enough of reality? I saw about 1 minute of a reality show where it was about couples arguing. Nice! I watched about 1 minute of a show with Snookie. I don't even know who the fuck she is. She woke up in the morning on the front lawn, and was upset with the ants on her pizza that was on the lawn next to her. She asked why ants would be on her pizza that was laying on the ground. My IQ dropped 5 points just from watching one minute. I'll take a brilliant 3-casino heist, over Snookie wondering why ants are invading her pizza that was on the ground all night. lol

    • hahaha exactly!

  • No, it would not have sole sold 150 million copies. It's all about fantasy, and a nasty man with a lot of money is what fantasies are made of. But that's not what women want in their real lives.

    • And a nasty woman?
