Men because they want casual sex but feel they aren't ready to be in a serious relationship or don't see themselves in a long term relationship with the girl they are having friends with benefits sex with.

Girls usually get into a friends with benefits thing because they like the guy and can see themselves getting serious with the guy eventually. For instance women will generally not be in a friends with benefits thing with a guy they don't see as high quality and end up getting hurt in the long run when he finds another chick and gets serious.

I dont' think that sex is over hyped, since it is the way we reproduce, it is essential to the continuation of the human race.
