Give night time video game rules. You can sleep for an XP boost in the morning, you can die and come back for an XP penalty, actions (with NPCs) don't have permanent consequences, magic without an arbitrary rule system exists, monsters spawn in unlit areas for XP and materials for more use in the "night world" and skills that are not MP reliant carry on into the day world.

Basically make them completely different realms of existence, sunset to sunrise. The only overlap being interactions you have with people, day or night, overlap into the other. Like if you keep spawn-camping your boss, you might get fired in the morning. If you never sleep, day or night, your health and productivity will break down, so you have to choose which world to inhabit, and for some people that means where as well.

Like living on the equator would give you an almost 50/50 time in each world, but a 50% chance of being in the world you don't want to inhabit at any time. For people who want to XP grind or live solely in the sun, Canada and Australia would see large population booms, those who want the night in one season, and conversely on the other hemisphere those who want the day.

It would be neat to see who would choose which, and among video-gamers which would choose to live in a game world, and which would want to keep it in a screen.

Surprisingly, in life, so much is giving up the perception of 'control' as you really can't control SHIT! You cannot even control your own body, and some have heart attacks, and cancer, proving the lack of 'control' of anything!
