Well then maybe we didn't start it! The fun thing with etymology is that all attributed meaning a word has today has to start somewhere. So when baby/babe was popularized it had a different meaning than it does now. Just like in 20 years Daddy might be primarily a sexual partner and not a parent. Just like baby/babe was primarily your actual kid.

For example, "falling off", in Ireland, is used casually. But from my perspective of when Americans use it, its offensive.
