Express this need clearly to your partner, explain why you need it and ask him to help you in that way as well. Communicate! Tell us more specifically what makes you feel small and insecure during sex. A non sexual hug isn't something most people do during sex.
I don't know what kind of sex you and your partner have, but I'm presuming you've never felt the intense passion and love of "making love" with your significant other. If you had, you wouldn't feel like you needed a hug because the whole thing is just a big hug of beautiful emotions, passion, intimacy, lust, love, and warmth.

Hugging during sex is completely normal. During sex you are both sharing each other's bodies. Skin to skin. There is more to it than just genitals. Rubbing, touching, kissing, hugging, playing with hair, massages. Hell some people even want to inflict pain with things like clamps and whips. Hugging is a lot more normal than that one and I'm pretty sure most people do hug during sex.
I wouldn't consider hugging during sex to be non sexual. If anything it makes it more intimate.
