Is it normal for a guy to get soft during sex?

I never had this problem with my boyfriend much. Usually he would be erect multiple times a night back to back. I was used to having multiple rounds of sex. One particualr night though he had already finished either 2 or 3 times I can't remember but I tried to go again and he got hard but it got right back soft while we were going and he kept saying "Im done. Thats it.". And I got self concious because I thought he wasn't attracted to the point that penis wouldn't stay hard while we were having intercourse. He told me "its not like that it just happens sometimes its not the girl." But I lied down and was sad. I think the next morning we had sex again and we rarely have morning sex. Was he not attracted to me or was he genuinely exhausted and how does that work?
