  • Talk to a counselor. Figure out your priorities and what remaining friends with them would mean.

I've had similar issues with my family in the past—although nothing as severe as rape. Nobody wants to hurt the family, and so they gloss over the offense of one member as "forgiving" them. Strong group preservation instinct. Apparently it's not uncommon.

My sister refused to do that, and she had to break away from most of the family as a result. She is still close to a lot of us, but does not come to family events where the offending party will be present.

I am still friends with the offender, but I am not friends with them at any cost to my sister. I take her side 100%. I am friends with them on my own time and at my own risk.

  • In most cases no.
But reminds me of the film A Time to Kill. One of the experts witnesses is exposed as having a conviction for rape. As a 17yr old he was involved with a 15yr old. Turns out they later married and had been together for 40 years.

Most Helpful Girls

  • Absolutely not. What the hell?
Not only are you disrespecting that family member, you’re also disrespecting yourself, and enabling him to think it’s okay and forgivable.

Why would you even ask if it’s okay to be friends with a fucking rapist and a criminal…What the hell?

  • Nope.
I hate 90% of my family. But if a friend of mine raped anyone, family or not, they're dead.
