Is it possible for straight people to be Christians if they engage in premarital sex?

Is it possible for straight people to be Christians if they engage in premarital sex?
Somebody made a poll asking if lesbians could be Christians, & a lot of people said no because same-sex encounters are condemned by the Bible. However, the Bible condemns premarital sex (even among straight people) even more often than same-sex relations.

So if gay people can't be Christian, then neither can 95% of modern straight people.

So what's your opinion? Can straight people, who engage in premarital sex, be Christian?
I am Christian. I think that both LGBT people, and straight people who have premarital sex, can be Christian

  • I'm not Christian but I do know that Jesus said absolutely nothing about homosexuality at all, at least as recorded in the Bible. As far as the Bible says, Jesus never got married either, so I don't see why Christians look to his example for marriage or sexual guidance. Most supposed Christians that take issue with homosexuality seem to quote Old Testament writings, such as those of Leviticus, completely ignoring the other Leviticus texts explicitly condemning such things as trimming sideburns and beards (19:27 - Gillette = tool of Satan?), wearing clothing of mixed fibres (19:19 - those cotton/polyester socks will send you straight to hell!), tattoos (19:28) and working on the Sabbath (19:30) (punishable by death!). Most of them also conveniently ignore the texts about slavery, welcoming foreigners and giving up personal wealth.
The answer to the question depends on who you are asking and about which particular situation because it is always self-serving. The Pope will call sexual relations a gift from God that allows a couple to bond and procreate because more Catholics are better for the Catholic Church. The thing about Catholicism is that is doesn't really matter what you do as long as you beg forgiveness and dedicate yourself to the church, so pre-marital sex is bad, but if you say sorry and have lots of Catholic kids, it's cool. People that want to discriminate for selfish personal reasons will interpret things in a harsher, more judgmental manner (despite explicit Biblical instruction to not judge, lest ye be judged yourself - Matthew 7:1).
In summary, Christianity is an archaic system of social instruction that served a purpose when the populous was not educated or even literate, but interpreting the Bible literally today results in a lot of odd messages that do not fit into modern society, particularly with regard to women's status as people rather than property, and some rather antediluvian attitudes to slavery.

  • Religion isn't spiritual it's obedience
And only harbours judgment towards others deemed unworthy.

    *cough* CULT.*cough*

To have a spiritual walk you need to uderstand your own instincts not by following orders from self proclaimed chosen "voice of god" or from a 2000 year old book full of drunk and sex crazed mens ramblings.

I feel Christians SEXUAL relationships are based on right or wrong and will judge anything they consider wrong rather than accept it. sad to know they will never understand the true expression of language that sex is ment to be. And is up to the individual not the scriptures who it's with

In a way by following blind in a religious movement your basicly choosing to cut yourself off from your own heart and soul and let others decide what's best for you.

If there is a "GOD" it's within yourself
    And exactly who you are!!
NOT in a bible or a church"s instruction

sex is a spiritual expression and the language of our soul. So is music..
Just listen to Christian music and you will hear just how boring and drone like it is.. exactly how they express themselves sexually/spiritually..
Religion has no room for spiritual expression.

All war through history is over a religion belief or in the name of one of the 1000's of "GODS"

May aswell say well because of the colour. of your skin you can't get to heaven

  • I’m a Christian. I grew up in the church. All you need to be a Christian is to believe in God and give your life to him. Those things mentioned above are sins. We sin everyday. Every sin is equal. If you love God you will try not to commit said sins. If you do just ask for forgiveness. The Christian religion is about a relationship not a set of rules. I don’t support the LGBT community or pre marital sex but that doesn’t exclude the people who participate in that from being a Christian.

That’s like saying a black person can't be conservative

  • In class we studied Christianity for a while and one of the main rules for sex is for it to be for the purpose of conceiving a child. It stated that LGBT people can be Christian, but gay sex is not allowed. LGBT people definitely can be Christian as you should be allowed to identify as any religion you choose, and even if they have a sexual relationship that is only breaking a few rules. As for premarital sex, I believe the same, people who have this can be Christian although breaking a rule or two.

    • "one of the main rules for sex is for it to be for the purpose of conceiving a child" that's false. Check out Song of Solomon. It celebrates sex, yet makes no mention of procreation. And even from a biological standpoint: if God intended sex to be only for the purpose of conceiving a child, then God wouldn't have made women to be fertile only a few days a month (around ovulation) despite being sexually receptive all month long

    • It isn't false. We studied this subject 3 hours a week for 8 weeks and this is what we were taught. That was definitely one of the rules.

    • "We studied this subject 3 hours a week for 8 weeks and this is what we were taught." Okay, that's great, but I actually grew up in a Christian church & have thoroughly studied the Bible for far more than 24 hours (the total of 3 hours times 8 weeks).

  • Yes..
Christianity is a religion or set of beliefs. It’s not something concrete that forces people to be/do anything.

Just like some Muslims engage in pedophilia/sexism, some Christians can engage in premarital sex.

    • Muslims aren't the only Faith that may have Pedophiles... HELL, The Catholic Church has More Pedophiles than any Religion!!!

    • Agreed. That’s another great example of how all religions have rules and some members who may abuse their position. No need to get heated- let’s try to remain civil. ☺️

  • By man's standard of "Christianity" no, like you wrote in your details.

But as a Bible reader (Agnostic myself), being a Christian is NOT to show man how religious you are.

Rather a Christian is a person who follows the Christ, and exercises faith in him as the Saviour; doing so not because he feels himself a righteous person, but rather a sinner requiring divine favour.

Hence it is a lifestyle of personal relationship with God, not the fearing Judgement daily; but accepting Grace.

Accounts of sex outside marriage, polygamy, invests, gay, etc fills the entire Bible and condemns "righteous" persons like King David and awarded Solomon with a thousand wives and concubine.

And Abraham himself has many wives so does Israel.

Of course we're talking about the Christian era.

But I'm talking about God from Genesis to Revelation.

He is greater than sex and man's heart. And I wonder if Christ death is enough to redeem fornication, willing ones.

Many Churchgoers say no. But who knows God's thoyghts?

David was spared from capital punishment when he ate the showbread and murder and fornicate

So was Peter who disowned the Christ.

And Mark who ran away when Christ was arrested.

What is fornication compared to these sins?

    Let God be Judge.

    • I think you said it perfectly. I am a Christian. The only true standards for Christianity is what the Bible instructs, especially Jesus himself. ANYTHING outside that is just man's religious customs. People need to realize there are 2 types of Christians. RELIGIOUS CHRISTIANS are those who blindly follow what man says, regardless of the Bible's teaching. SPIRITUAL CHRISTIANS are the ones who obey the Bible literally and work on their walk with Christ, regardless of what others say. Most problems that come between Christians and those outside the faith comes from the religious ones, not the spiritual ones.

    • @jgokgotit indeed. And I truly see your point, that having a religion is different from having faith (= your being spiritual) It's so easy to have a religion. Just wear the clothes and use the religious symbols. But having faith, oh so difficult! Walking the steps of Christ is literally impossible for any man: Sacrificing self so that others may live; not doing it just once (for others to see), nor twice (for publicity), but daily until ones life is spent and gets nothing in return, not even keeping his clothes at death. That is love. And such is the love that cover sins. And all should be grateful that forgiveness is granted even before the sin is committed. This is Grace. Not something earned so that one may boast, but something freely given so that God is praised.

    • There are many "Christians" who will face Jesus and he will say "Begone for I never knew you". I forget what verse that is, but it basically means you can do all the good deeds in the world, but if you do not seek a relationship with Jesus, he will deny you before the father. I try my best to have a relationship with Jesus, but even I fear falling short sometimes. lol sorry to go on a preaching rant. It just bugs me how some Christians miss the point and act as representative for us all and turn others away from Jesus before they can even try to know him.

  • Repentance is a major part of Christianity. If you claim to be living (or trying to live) righteously you can't keep sleeping around, regardless of what genitals the other person has.

I'm assuming the question is referring to peoples past's, otherwise my answer is C. Many of us have regrettable pasts, and because of that we depart from our old ways of living.

  • My friend is a church going Christian, however argues that the bible was written with a lot of things being a survive guide, such as heterosexual relationships leading to children and at the time population wasn't as massive as today...
She argues that it is the guidance that should be followed, such as being good to your fellow man... if you are doing that it doesn't matter your sexual orientation or whether you've had sex or not, you are doing God's work by being kind to others

  • I think what they said is if they did not repent of their sins then they would not go to Heaven. Anyone can claim to be a Christian but they are not necessarily so. True forgiveness requires Repentance. So even a gay person can go to heaven if they repent and turn away from their sinful acts. The thing is, I don't see any other sin in the Bible that is called an Abomination other than homosexuality. We all also break most of the 10 Commandments. But there is a difference in practicing them as a way of life or just occasionally.

    • "I don't see any other sin in the Bible that is called an Abomination other than homosexuality." There are many others; you just don't hear about them because they don't fit the agendas of homophobic Christians. Deuteronomy 25:16 says that unrighteousness in general is an abomination. The 10 commandments don't include homosexuality, nor do the commandments that Jesus listed when the rich man asked him what he needs to do to enter heaven. I'm not saying a sin; I'm simply saying that it's not the sole abomination.

    • I never knew that was in there although not all versions of the Bible use the word Abomination. It was also interesting in verse 11, 12 that if 2 men are fighting and one of the men's wife grabs the other guy by the balls she shall have her hand cut off. Obviously the men treasured their jewels. ha ha

  • I think a person is a Christian if they think they are Christian. People who judge them are un-Christian. If there is a God, only he will judge them when the time comes.

I've had sex with a lot of women who espoused some form of Christianity and I know lots of Christians who have sex outside of marriage. There are many variations on Christianity, including Unitarian Universalist Christians. Not all Christians believe in an angry, judgmental, sadistic God.

  • Easily.

    • Same as LGBT community can be Christian's.

  • Yes, Hipocrisy is Very Popular in the Christian Faith. Many Christians Love to Condemn One Person/Group for something when they are doing the Exact same thing!!! HYPOCRISY!!!

Anyhow I believe as long as you are not Forcing, Manipulating, or Coercing Anyone into Sexual Activity you are not committing a Sin and can be a Christian in Good Faith. I Believe in a Loving God NOT a Punishing God!!!

  • Regardless of sexual orientation, if sinners cannot be Christians, then no one can be a Christian.

    • "So you don't know that indigenous people won't be in God's Kingdom? Don't be fooled; there is no place in God's Kingdom for immoral persons; for those who commit adultery, worship idols, or engage in homosexual acts; for any greedy person or thief; or for those who curse or cheat others. Some of you used to be like that, but now you have been cleansed, redeemed, and made holy in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and by our God's Spirit." ( 1Corinthians 6:9-11).

    • Unrighteous*(sorry, autocorrect mistake)

    • @Dchrls78104 And are you a sinner?

  • For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

And God demonstrated his love for us in this, that while we were yet sinners, God sent his son to die for us.

In other words, sinners are christians

  • read your bible and ask God ! Thanks

    • Perhaps you could reference those versus like others have so she can read the Bible the problem today is christians who have been raised in the word don't understand that the Bible is difficult to navigate to get the answer you need your comment was distasteful and spiteful of someone who is seeking wisdom in the matter even if the question starts as one sided.

  • Sure! Evangelicals call themselves Christians while idolizing Trump violating every rule in the Bible.

  • I think in fairness it depends on your perception of your Christianity (Disclaimer I am agnostic) - My criteria is I am fine with most things as long as they don't interfere with everyone else - So in reality I don't mind if you are a hetro couple waiting for marriage or a gay couple having premarital sex 5 times a day in every room in the house as long as you are not preaching at me.
My quibble with organised religion is that at their pure centres they are about love, right and wrong - It is only when people get their hands on it and write holy books with their own bias. I am no expert but I am sure most holy books if taken too literally will have out of date , unfounded views apart from sexuality people justified racism/colonialism with holy books as well.
So long answer, short "Live and let live"

  • I think it makes you a glorified hypocrite, but, do you.

  • I actually answered on that question about gay people and my answer also applies here.
There are many versions of the church. If you take Christianity to it's extremes then a LOT of things are forbiden and we are definitely all sinners doomed to hell.
But our God is a God of love and forgiveness and so I personally believe that if it's done with full desire from both parties no reason why it's a mortal sin.

  • If you are really a Christian, you know you should not be having casual sex. The bible is quite specific, about premarital sex.

  • You know I’m not Christian at all, but I used to be for a significant portion of my life... I think the only thing you need to be a true Christian is a certain degree of Stockholm Syndrome. Everything else will work itself out as long as you maintain it.

  • some i would say depends on the extent of your faith tbh, also depends on the cult you are with... but way i see it being something due to practicing a belief doesn't mean you are or aren't a follower in my opinion

whether you take part in premarital sex, or gay or bi or a green alien from the planet wtf... if you choose to believe in something and follow in that belief then you are designated whatever they call people who are following that which you are following...
and those who dont agree with what you do or your existence do not dictate what you can and cannot believe... just cos they dont agree

    but yes they can be...

  • I don’t pay any attention to people who claim to follow God but then judge others for not following him the way they think he should be followed iTunes out they make no sense to me

    • Judge not or you will be judged no human can judge another

  • Nice job pointing out the hypocrisy lol

    • It's true that both groups are sinning. The difference is that gay/lesbian/bi sex acts are frowned on in the Bible more than just regular hetero fornication, because same sex intimacy is described as "an abomination."
