A couple of my military friends who identify as straight had their first same sex encounter in the military. They say it was mainly oral or helping a buddy out, but it's not like everyone was doing it. They also said it was down to the prolonged confinement together and lack of female contact, also one of them said it was kind of like bonding which he said is important for military guys. I'd add that both of these friends were in the Arny, none of my navy or airforce buddies shared the same experiences or at least that's what they said anyway 🤔.
I don't think it's mainstream in the military but I don't know for sure, I'm sure what happens in the barracks stays in the barracks.

Very uncommon. I only knew of 2 openly gay male soldiers over the span of almost 5 years, and that's across probably about 300 that I knew reasonably well. Allegedly it's more common in the Navy and to a lesser extent the Marines, but that's a popular joke so can neither confirm or deny.
The women were a different story entirely. Probably a minimum of 25% were lesbian or bi, and I'd bet it's higher.
The military has long been an attractive career for the gay community. Even men who would normally claim to be straight will partake in the occasional gay activity.
One of the biggest problems the military has always faced is that of STDs picked up in bars and brothels. Homosexuality has been encouraged as a way of stopping men visiting prostitutes. Nelson was quoted as saying it's better a man bends over a barrel than slink into a brothel.

I'm sure there are a couple of gays in the military but I don't think there's a lot of them that are on the down low. A lot of military people seem to be pro-gun nationalists. And the stereotypical gay person is not that. So I would say that if someone told you there's lots of gays in the military that it's probably an unfounded lie.
Focus should not be on if such large organisations and career fields have gays among them but how to ensure safety to all. Gays can get bullied verbally, physically and mentally just as easily as become the bullied that target straight victims.
Armies are supposed to delliver the feeling of safety to their country. Always easier said than done.
