Is masturbation a sin?

The obvious question is: according to who? As per Christianity (which I'm most familiar with), yes- but also not really. See, since God can't be bothered to give us direct explanatory information (hint, hint, Lord!), we've got to go through intermediaries, and every major sect condemns it on some grounds or other. But Jesus Himself doesn't. Or, rather, Jesus as reported in the canonical gospels doesn't, since He, too, didn't leave any written works (and thought that His return in glory to end the world would be happening within a few years or decades; I guess poor communication is pretty widespread). Jesus, talking about sexuality, had very little to say, suggesting it wasn't particularly important in light of more important issues.
The single biggest statement on the subject is this: "But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart." (Matthew 5:28)
Implications of it being okay to ogle a man aside, that seems pretty straightforward. But lust isn't a choice, conscious or otherwise, and sin requires moral agency. Logically, then, lust is a sin in the same sense that hunger is. It could of course still be undesirable, but then the only options you have to prevent it are surgical mutilation (which would violate the "go forth and multiply" command, so that's out) and total satiation (stuff yourself with enough food, and you'll lose the ability to feel hunger for a while; sex is no different).
Logically, then, if masturbation is a sin, then it's a milder sin than lack of masturbation, at least when you have no other options available.
Lust in the Bible does not mean sexual desire. It means in inordinant sexual desire.
Yes, it is a grave sin. Read this from Catholic Catechism, article 2352:
"By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action. The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose. For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved. To form an equitable judgment about the subjects' moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability."
You can read about Onan wasting semen in the Bible:
"But since Onan [...] spilled his semen on the ground [...]. What he did was displeasing in the sight of the Lord, and he put him to death also."
What Onan did was openly defy God and dishonor his brother's Levirate marriage. THAT was what displeased the Lord.
That is precisely what the debate is about. Some people say it's about the act of masturbation and others the act of defying God. Some people say it's about both.
That’s not the King James Version
Eh, depends how far down the religious rabbithole of delusion you are.

Sin isn't as real thing. Beliefs vary.
The truth is I don't know and if something is going to be sin, it's most likely the lustful thoughts you imagine but I don't know
If it is, everybody's a sinner.
It's just as much of a sin as fucking is and you KNOW how we all got here!!
There are no such things as sins because all religions are just made up nonsense.
Masturbation is a normal.
even if they were, just be sorry and it's cool. that's how sin works.
If it is then I sure am going to hell.
(I don't think it is though)
If it were a sin all guys would be sinners. No it is normal, healthy, safe and it feels great!
I’ve heard certain shun masturbation as if it’s a disease their treated like a sex addict. Fun fact that’s why corn flakes were invented by a religious doctor wanted to cure temptation..
i don’t think it’s a sin, if it dosent hurt anyone..
Of course not
No, if its a sin then why did God make it feel so good?
Not unless you're a Roman Catholic.
I sure hope not... I can't repent that much lol
I was taught that as a child. It is lustful and possibly adultery…
But technically there are many other sins that people commit constantly and save for 1 they are equal and forgivable.
So yeah but
According to protestantism, they are equal. But not all types of Christianity hold that view.
Its the best sin to do!
There is no such thing as sin. Religion is just mythology. Don’t live your life based on fictional tales written long ago.
It's not a rule that anything you enjoy doing must be a sin 💀
If it doesn't hurt others or you then it's no problem
