Is Oedipus complex real?

Sigmund Freud theorized that all young boys experience sexual desire towards their mother. I consider Freud to be quack nut job yet he is held to be a great thinker by universities despite many people disagreeing with his theories. I never experienced sexual desire towards my mother but it's something I occasionally hear mentioned by guys that always point to Freud as "proof" that it's normal. What's your thoughts on this? Have you experienced this or known someone that did?

I think a boys mom is the first model for what he might look for in a woman. Hence why if women would have a problem with their son finding a woman exactly like them, they should definitely look at changing.
