It’s a mental illness but not all mental illnesses are deserving of sympathy.
Anti social personality disorder is one of them. They lack empathy but they are capable of knowing right from wrong on a factual level.


Pedophilia is a mental illness but it doesn’t prevent you from using self control so don’t feel to bad for them.

It’s not such a straight forward question…. because as much as it presents itself as a mental illness, & it’s hard to conceive the idea that a stable mind would find a child sexually appealing, there are some countries where it’s legal and considered normal.
It’s a tough one.

In most cases, it’s a mental illness. If a person is assaulting a 5 year old child, they aren’t well. It’s not normal behaviour. Many people who you see caught and assessed are ashamed of it. I don’t think anyone would choose to be that way.

The majority of them are family and close friends who believe they are doing good by "helping" or "teaching" them It's not a lack of empathy but rather a very misguided dilution! And once in treatment have enormous remorse for the pain they have created. The small amount that are strangers as in the kidnappers are very much without any empathy or remorse. This is less than 10% of cases. The stranger danger is very real and are the extremely dangerous ones. Very much likely to reoffend and escalate into murder!

Just like kidnappers and serial killers know what they are doing to people is causing pain. A lot of serial killers have tendencies of pedophilia too. Its really really dusturbing.

Neither. Its a crime punishable by law in varying degrees in various countries.

For example the lowest age of consent in the world is Japan at 13. But in France that would be punishable as paedophilia.

Hence its something a lot of people talk shit about, but know very little. Your country laws, are not other peoples laws.

@ellaa1_1 exactly. i didn't make a statement claiming being gay or trans is a choice or not. i said "it's as much of a choice as pedophilia is". i don't know if it is or not. my heterosexual attraction to mature women was certainly not a conscious choice i made, so i don't know if it's a choice or not. but i think that if it's a choice, then we should treat gays and trans people as if their sexuality is a choice. and if it's not a choice, then we can not treat pedophiles as if they chose being attracted to children.

i think that it must be a horrible experience if what you seuxally like is not allowed or frowned upon in a society. that was certainly terrible for gay and trans people but it's getting better. so since we accepted then, why do we not accept pedophiles? that's what i don't understand. and i'm by no means saying we should let adults have sex with children. i'm saying we should have acceptance for pedophiles.

I'm not sure about this one. However I do want to note the difference between a peterast and a pedophile. A pederast is someone who actually has sexual relationships with a child. A pedophile is someone who is attracted to children.

People usually mix it up with efebofilia. The latter has to do with a parafilia that consist in feeling attraction to teenagers.

The term sexual predator is used to englobe those individuals.

As much as I don’t agree with it, it is a sexuality just like being gay. Therefore the people who claim it is a mental illness are the same type of people who used to chastise gay people for having a mental illness.

I've heard it's similar to a sexuality in that it can't be changed. Which is awful. Of course pedophilia shouldn't be accepted, but that would mean no matter how much therapy a pedophile gets, they will always struggle with those urges.

But then, I've also heard of people who had pedophilic feelings and got over them with therapy. In those cases, it always seems to be caused by them having been sexually abused in their own childhood.

So either one of the two things I heard is wrong, or there's multiple types of pedophilia. One type is a treatable mental illness, and one type isn't.

Now, touching a child is absolutely a choice. But I believe that the urges to do so are much less controllable. I have sympathy for pedophiles who've hurt no one, and are horrified by the thoughts they have.

If it's a mental illness then the majority of guys have it because I have been looked at, stared at, leered at, hit on, touched, kissed, propositioned, flirted with, innuendos and sexual comments and jokes, and everything else you can think of by guys of every age since I was 12, and most of my friends went through some version of this also. Guys will never admit they like younger girls, but ask the girls, they will tell you many, many guys do this when they are little. See how many looks or comments you get at a family pool party.

Why would they be attracted to young girls when they're young (the same age) but stop being attracted when they're older? It doesn't make any sense. Even worse, why is it bad for a 20 year old guy to be want to have sex with a 17 year old girl, but then it's perfectly ok for a 50 year old man to fuck or even marry an 18 year old girl?

It's not a good idea to allow it for other reasons, but the attraction is still there. It's a society-imposed rule and everyone turns it into a mental illness.
