It is a kind of "legal" guarantee that the woman has so that the man only produces for her; the intention is to limit the procreative instinct of man.

In the old days women withheld sex until marriage as sex lead to pregnancy, not so since the invention of the pill in 60s. This way a man knew after marriage for certain that 9 months later any child was his. People usually were waiting for marriage before sex but nature won so they had to marry.
