It Makes Sense to be Worried About Teenagers-Just Not For The Reasons Everyone Thinks

In 1993, the movie Dazed and Confused hit theaters, and people instantly fell in love with the movie(for the record, I think it's one of the most overrated movies of all time, but that's for another Take, another day). The Silent Generation'ers loved it because it reminded them of raising those little rascals. Baby Boomers loved the movie because it provoked a yearning for the 1970s-a lush nostalgia for the most party-fueled decade in the 20th Century. Generation X'ers loved the movie because most of them were teenagers at the time, and they enjoyed a movie revolving around their fantasy lifestyles that they knew would never happen, and even in this day of age, both Generation Y/Z'ers have a yearning for the 1990s.

It Makes Sense to be Worried About Teenagers-Just Not For The Reasons Everyone Thinks

Why do I mention this movie? Because the movie showcases a life in which only teens from the 70s would survive. The movie displays casual sex, excessive alcohol use, drug use, violence, crime, and even cursing from teenagers. And these teens weren't your "college kids", per say-many of the teens in the movie were between 13-15 years old, and were already used up more than your average 40 year old back-alley whore looking to make some drug money.

Despite the fact it's just a movie-a movie about a decade which is is impossible to replicate-people still worry about teenagers. Except, it's not just the movie(although the movie is a fun example to use)- people worry about teens without watching movies, or TV. And let's not pretend like it's solely a worry-people are downright afraid of teens. People think they're the spawn of Satan himself, and people really consider teens a burden on society. But how much of is true?

It's true-definitely true-just not for the reasons everyone thinks. Gone are the days of beer bongs, and blow. Gone are the days of teen girls losing count of how many Chads she slept with. It's not 1973 anymore. It's not 1993 anymore-heck, I still need to remind people it's not 2003 anymore.

Below is some data I've gathered from the most reliable sources I can find. Granted, every statistic should be taken with a grain of salt(and sometimes, some paprika), but reliable studies, and some hard data will always be better than that blue-haired 15 year old who treats Tumblr like it's the Bible. I should also mention these statistics coincide with teenagers living in the United States of America.

Teenagers Are Having Less Sex Than Any Other Generation of Teens in History

If the raging male GAGers, and Redditors weren't enough to convince you that we have a virgin epidemic going on in this country, perhaps some actual data will paint the picture for you.

In July, 2018, the Center of Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) released a report stating the follow regarding sexual relationships among teenagers.

-From 2007-2018, the percentage of high school students(generally aged 14-18 years old) who have had sex showed a steady decrease. In 2007, 52 percent of high schoolers were virgins(which was quite high compared to the 1990s), and these days, 61 percent of high schoolers report being virgins(virgins being defined as sexual intercourse). So, read it high schoolers-if you're a virgin, you're not only in the majority-you're in a significant majority.

-For awhile there, people worried that the sex itself was more dangerous than the cigarette afterwards, especially among teenagers. From 2007-2018, the use of condoms among teenagers has also seen a slight increase-From 53 percent of sexually active teens using a condom(every time they have sex) to 58 percent of sexually active teens using a condom(every time they have sex).

Of course, this also correlated to some rock-bottom teen pregnancy rates(and abortion rates are extremely low, mind you). So, not only are teens holding off sex until they're 21 years old, and whining about their "virginhood" on GAG, they're also being safer about sex(when they finally do have it), which is more important than anything else in the sex study I mentioned.

So, the next time you hear of a Regina George making a "thot-list", or your ultra-religious grandmother complain about the "morals" of teens, tell them to do some research, and quit their petty crap.

Teens Are Using Drugs(Including Legal Ones) Less Than Any Other Generation of Teens in History

Given teens these days share memes about why eating canned GMO vegetables are "bad" for you on their Instagram pages, is this really a shocking study?

-First, I'll bore you to tears about the legal drugs/substances/poisons. In December, 2018, According to the Responsibility.org surveys, 59 percent of teens between the ages of 13-18 reported they had never drank alcohol in their lifetime. This is a 13 percent decrease since 2009(the year I graduated from high school), and a 22 percent decrease since 1991. As for binge drinking(which is defined as having five, or more drinks in a row(four for girls), 25 percent of teenagers in 2009 binge drank, while only 14 percent of teens binge drink these days. Perhaps we should call this current generation of teens: Generation T: Teetotalers.

-I won't go into citing the statistics(just to speed this up, and keep it short), but as expected, tobacco use among teens has also seen significant decreases in the past decade.

-When it comes to illegal drugs, cannabis is the only drug which has shown an increase for the past decade. However, many people debate on whether marijuana should be a drug, or not in the first place. On top of this, since weed is becoming legalized, it is now more widespread than it ever has before, it's easier to obtain, thus spurring increases(so in these cases, it's obviously not an "illegal" drug anyway). Finally, much of this use is medical use, and that is hardly seen as a negative thing.

-Other hard illegal drugs(heroin, meth, cocaine, etc.) has seen significant decreases in the past decade. Excluding marijuana, only 18 percent of teens report experimenting with drugs-which is a twelve percent decrease since 1998.

Just remember, the "opioid crisis" scare tactic which hits your local news tube probably has nothing to do with teens(or young folks) in general-it's probably the middle-aged Generation X'ers, and Baby Boomers shootin' up like it's 1999!

Teens Are Less Likely to Engage in Violence Than Any Other Generation of Teens

Gone are the days when girls cook like their mothers, now they fight like their fathers, the meme says...

....except nobody hits anyone, no'mo.

-Drawing from nationally representative data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the study examines trends in violence (including fighting, group fighting, and attacks with intent to harm) among youth ages 12-17. Study findings indicate that among youth in general, violence is meaningfully down. Indeed, Salas-Wright and colleagues found that the prevalence of youth violence steadily dropped from a pinnacle of 33.6% in 2003 to a low of 23.7% in 2014.

-Violence was generally defined as physical assault, rape, and flat out harmful behavior towards others, for more simple terms.

Conclusions to be Drawn

We've come to a conclusion: With some peer-reviewed, relevant sources, teenagers these days are sober virgins who wouldn't harm a fly. What's the big deal?

Some of you may be pondering on the title of this Take. Truth be told, this is where it takes a huge twist.

Look, none of this so far should even be that surprising. Electronic technology was spoon-fed to teens these days, as if it was their breakfast, lunch, dinner-and even dessert for some teens. Given it's much more comfortable to lounge around with your Smart Phone, tablets, video games, laptops, and Skype Calls all day, it's no wonder teens are tame these days: They're flat out boring.

Almost too boring. I've had teens tell me it's a burden for them to walk five minutes to their friends house, because it's cold outside. Who can blame them? Why have sex with that thick, cold baddie, when you can watch a Snapchat video of her stripping? Why get drunk with your bros(before hoes, of course) when you can smoke weed, and binge-watch Netflix on your Firestick? Why show your enemy who's boss when you can share an offensive meme on his Facebook wall? I'll admit, as a Millennial, we aren't(and weren't) much better. But the good thing is, we know what life was like before we were zombies programmed into our Smart Phones. We know how to live like the good ol' days(as Macklemore, and Kesha put it).We knew what YOLO meant, and we(sorta) lived by it, damn it! We fell in between the "old fashioned values" of previous generations, and the tech-plague of future generations. In other words, we were that fence that separates the green grass, and the brown grass.

The real problems are outside of this realm of "bad things" we deem as a backwards society. We all know stone-cold sober people who are vile humans. We all know just because someone is a virgin, doesn't stop him from being a mass shooter. We all know that some people may not be violent, but can be downright cruel. Keep in mind, this is coming from a sober guy myself who has never been high, or drunk.

None of the statistics I cited proved that teenagers are any good, anyway, right? Here are some more sinister secrets among teens these days.

Bullying is More Widespread Among Teens Than it Ever Has Been

Before your Uncle Darrell yells at you because you "can't bully unless you use 'yer fists", tell Darrell he's dead wrong.

As we discussed, teens are snowflakes who aren't violent. But this doesn't mean they can't bully behind a touchpad.

According to the National Bully Prevention Center(NBPC), bullying is rampant-which roughly 80 percent of students report being bullied. While physical bullying seems to be fading away, cyberbullying takes the cake these days, and proves that bullying comes in many forms.

See, this is the problem with a socially inept generation of teens who won't make the first punch-they will make sure to terrorize you on the internet. Just when you thought you could escape bullying by calling it a day at school, the crap follows you at home. And that's what makes it scary.

Back in 1999, if you were bullied at school, at least you could escape it by leaving school. However, in this day of age, the bullies are right behind a screen. And that's a problem.

Teenage Suicide Rates Are Soaring-Which Correlates to a Deteriorating Mental Health Among Teens

Even as someone who has never watched it, I can't help, but think shows like 13 Reasons Why aren't helping this matter at all. However, this is the biggest problem I see among teenagers, especially Caucasian teens. So, excuse me for sounding like your Aunt Mildred, but please don't watch that show-it's a bad influence, dear!

According to the CDC, there has been a 70 percent increase in teen suicide from 2006-2016. That increase is so staggering, it gives my spine chills just typing it out.

Of course, people have different theories as to why this is: Bully victims claim it's due to bullying(which is odd, since they clearly survived), mental health activists want more mental health treatment(we all have mental health issues though), some people blame violent video games(ha), some people blame it on the lack of religious beliefs in younger generations(even though some religions encourage suicide) and so on. Personally, I think we need to quit glorifying suicide, but people seem to think my theory is crazy.

The real truth(no, not the false TRUTH commercials), is it's not as simple as a light switch. It's probably a combination of different factors. It's probably because teens see others having "fun" on their Instagram pages, and get depressed. It's probably because of the economy. It's probably because many teens see no hope in the future. It's probably because our choice for president in the 2020 Election will be between a cheese puff, and a Native American European White Woman.

Back to seriousness, I'm not entirely sure why anyone(especially teens) take their lives. I'm not sure why my cousin committed suicide two years back, when he once told me his brother was selfish for taking his own life. I'm not sure why I can teach a school plastered with black teens who aren't suicidal, and go to broken homes on the daily, and worry about their lives in a violent neighborhood, but for whatever reason, the upper-class suburban white girl killed herself because her note states she would never get that new Subaru...

I'll quit the black comedy now, and get to my point: Mental health, and suicide is such a complicated topic, nobody truly knows the antidote.

...So What About Them Teens?

All as I know is, given what I've stated about mental health, suicide, and bullying, I think those are the headlines I should be seeing, instead of a teen male who had too much to drink one Saturday Night.

  • Holy shit! Haha! I knew I wasn't going mad, and simply was born in the wrong generation!!!

I can anecdotally back this entire take up with my own experience going through school and further education. Whilst sex and drugs to definitely still go on, it truly is no where near the levels of the 60's-90's...

What the data tells us is this:

    1) People's general social skills have become more and more stunted from the turn of the century - we can attribute this to social media and the politically correct climate we currently live in, among other things. Social media in earlier eras would have been seen as weird and something for creepy nerds to spy on hot high school chicks because they couldn't get laid...

Now all of a sudden that has become globally cool?

    2) As a result of this, the genders have become far more alienated and disenfranchised from one another (in fairness this problem stretches far beyond school and university); they simply lack the social skills to form relationships with one another, no matter how typically "American Pie" these relationships might be.

    3) Even as the 18-21 crowd reach university, they have had relatively so little contact (or at least sexual experience) with the other gender (as well as forming friends with their own gender), that when it comes to fucking sorority girls and what not... They're all too busy posting selfies of themselves rather than sticking their dicks in a drunk horny girl... 😴😴😴😴

    4) Even the "chads" or "jocks" of the bygone eras are nowhere to be found today. What we have now is these emasculated little gym rats that are popularly referred to as "fuckbois"... This clip from 21 jump street sums it up...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2baG40Jpn2M

    ...

Man I don't know whether to laugh or cry :(

Born in the wrong generation... Fucking pussies everywhere!

    • I'm not much older than you, and anecdotally, I remember the same things you've experienced. Even in college, it wasn't all that great.

    • Exactly! Whilst I *personally* made as much fun for myself as was possible going through university, our generation is in no way comparable to even the marginally older "American Pie" generation. I was astounded at how withdrawn most people were, at a cultural level, let alone personal. Like I say, partying still goes on, kids do still have sex... But the difference now is that its all done with a smartphone at hand, and everyone arranges socials through (un) social media. I was like a throwback to everyone, especially my friends, I drank hard (not into drugs, I lift and box so no good for me), wanted to screw girls, didn't mind getting into fights, called a spade a spade... And rather than join in, they would just get intimidated by it... Not because I was OTT, but because they lacked any testosterone at all... A lot of my friends just got fat from drinking... And having the odd, awkward fumble with a low class kind of girl... I thought 21 Jump Street highlighted it perfectly, our guy was an "old skool chad", and the new "fuckbois" were these cucky little simps... Man... *shivers up the spine*...

  • Tbh I'm glad teen's are having less sex. The population is already at 8 billion now. That's a problem.

Anyhow, I agree there should be less titles about teens with drugs, sex, violence, and etc. And more topics on mental health, the fucked school system, social media affects, and dumb shit parents are teaching their kids that will cripple them in the future.

    • Like what

    • Even though I see nothing morally wrong with sexual relations, I do think it's a positive thing that teens are having less sex than they ever have. The world population is one issue (not necessarily for first-world countries though), but even though teens are safer about sex than they ever have been, they are still irresponsible to some degree, and many of them don't think about the consequences of pregnancy, and/or STDs/STIs.

  • This is a very good take!

  • so what generation am i part of, considering that I am so close to the in-between line? I'm 19, by the way.

    • According to recent compilations from demographic experts, you're not on the "in-between" line at all between generations. Since you're 19 years old, this means you were probably born in 1999(or it's still possible you were born in 1998). Generation Z (the one after Generation Y/Millennials) is widely considered people born from 1996-2012. Clearly, you're a Generation Z'er. 100 percent of teenagers in 2018 are part of Generation Z.

    • thanks.

  • "you got a joint?", "No*..." It'd be a lot cooler if you did"

  • Thank you. I am so fucking tired of hearing how teens are out having sex with a billion people a day while popping some mollies at the same time when... that is FARRR from the truth.

    • Right... Even without the statistics, I have noticed first hand that teenagers are a little... tame these days? I know so many of them who refuse to have sex with "just anyone", and are the first ones to deem drugs as "bad." Hell, if anything, the oldest Millennials, and youngest Generation X'ers are the most promiscuous "party" people.

  • I never saw it. But how you describe it it kind of sounds like middle school experience... I'll watch it and get back to you.

    • OK I watched it... “movie revolving around their fantasy lifestyles that they knew would never happen” Most of that stuff in the movie was pretty normal man, and I’d even say very light in reality to the things teenagers actually do… I was a teen in the 90s. Hair was shorter and clothes were baggier, it was less cock-rock and more hip-hop, it was riced out Japanese cars and street racing not American muscle cars and pick up trucks, but generally that’s the sort of shit teens do. Drugs were definitely all over the place, at least 80% of the student body did them. Drug deals between friends happened all the time. We didn’t take bong hits inside wood shop, but we did smoke bowls out the back door of auto and metal shop… We played spades and gambled for lunch money in wood shop. I use to walk into the corner convince store and buy beer and cigarettes without getting carded from the age of about 12 on wards. There were multiple keg parties every weekend. Sometimes they were at people’s houses when their parents were out of town, sometimes they were on the beach, sometimes they were in parking garages, sometimes they were in warehouses, sometimes they were on city land that we opened with bolt cutters, sometimes there were block parties, etc. Showing up with a trunk full of beers at a party happened. We use to get into night clubs underage in Miami and Fort. Lauderdale all the time. We use to go to concerts, but it wasn’t just one big one for the summer… It was Marley Fest, Miami Hip-Hop Festival, Ultra, warehouse raves, night club concerts, university concerts, and other venues. School dances were considered lame. I remember being about 14 in a bar and being the youngest one in the group a blond in a lime green g-string walked up to put a pitcher of beer on the table and she ask me how old are you, and I said old enough what’s your name sweetheart and she smirked and walked off wiggling her ass to tease me. :)

    • I was at high school parties in 7th grade onward. Older guys would give me sex pep talks when I was getting with older girls. Breakfast at 5 AM at a dinner after partying all night was normal. Mom was always up late night when we came home drunk, stoned, tripping, etc to ask us questions, see if we were OK, why we came in so late, etc. Teenagers stole shit. There were grab and dash on beer, people did pocket bottles of hobo wine (Mad Dog) at grocery stores and even large bottles of liquor at the liquor store, and plenty of other things. Stupid destructive shit happened… Taking a baseball bat to about 20 mail boxes happened. Blowing up Halloween pumpkins with M80s happened. Smashing car windows with cracked porcelain happened. Graffiti was big. Grand theft auto happened (a number of guys I knew use to sell cars to chop shops). Breaking and entering happened. I never had anyone shoot at me, but I had a number of guns pointed in my face including an AK-47. We trespassed on school grounds from time to time, but it wasn’t to drink on the 50 yard line. We use to break into the golf cart cage at night and hot wire the golf carts and race around the school hallways and on the track playing demolition derby while drinking and smoking weed. Gambling happened (card/billiards). A guy I knew was a youth state champion at billiards but was a bit of a pussy. He use to hustle people at bars and would pay me to be the muscle and collect… First fights happened, but not when people were smoking weed. Drunk people start shit though.

    • All that bullying with gay ass spanking paddles wasn’t a thing. We didn’t pick on little kids and as kids we weren’t cowards that took hazing. If you tried some shit like that we’d fuck your ass up, stomp you, take your wallet, and leave you in the streets bleeding. I wasn’t in a street gang but rolled with about 15-20 guys at a time and had acquaintances in every street gang. There were a lot of gangs in the 90s Crips, Bloods, Folk, Latin Kings, La Raza, PCB, etc. There was a lot of violence in general in the 90s, but most of it wasn’t gang related. Sometimes huge riots between rival gangs happened like up to 50 people fighting at a time. But that senior vs freshman crap is bullshit. The closest to thing to that in my life was a senior named Jimmy that started talking shit to me in the court yard one day, and I was like “Who the fuck you think your talking to? I will fuck your ass up” and then my older brother ran up to Jimmy (they were in the same grade) and said back off he’s not playing and Jimmy backed down. :D While I’m sure things have slowed down a lot since the 90s with so many kids being addicted to the internet and not getting outside as much as we use to, I’m sure they still get into mischieve. It’s just part of growing up.

  • Once i read the title i knew this wass gonna be a lot of bs.

And if you cannot figure out why all this is bs i canmot be bothered explaining why, but to all smart people who know why you are great.

    • Let me guess.. you're that teenager who says "I hate my generation, because we're corrupt, and I'm the only one who isn't a fucking idiot", right? It's okay. I was that teenager too.

    • Nope not at all. It's just all you have said is bs and can be showed that there dumb for example less sex were already in a world with to many people so we don't need more sex. That's just one example and like i said canvt be arsed showing you why the rest are dumb, smart people will know your wrong in all these points lol.

    • I never said we need more sex, and I even admitted that we shouldn't worry about teenagers' sex lives in the post. You didn't just miss that point-you completely let it fly over your head, and into the depths of outer space.

  • Neat take

  • Nah i do a lot drugs used sell/make drugs fuck and all the fun stuff not much violence jut ocasionally im 15 rn but my parents didn't really have much technology growing up mostly besides tv

  • I guess I was much more interesting than I realized way back when. 😂

    • Were you the socially awkward nerd who had no friends? It's okay little man...

    • Actually from middle school on, I had a large group of friends (almost against my will) that forced me into being social when I was more than content on being a loner with no or very few friends. I still have contact with most of them to this day.

    • Interesting. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side.

  • I see this stat over and over about most teens being virgins and i dont believe it. I date younger girls usually in first year college and only one was a virgin. And i just randomly say hi its not like im finding them at a slutwalk or something.

Unless all the teen girls are dating older men? Lol and all the teen guys are the virgins.

    • The statistics aren't making the claim that 18/19 year olds (usually first year of college) are usually virgins (they aren't). Most modern day data is saying that roughly 60 percent of ALL teens (13-19 year olds) are virgins. You have to think, a big bulk of that 60 percent are teens between 13-15 years old. The older teens (16-19 years old) are obviously less likely to be a virgin. For the record, teen girls are actually slightly more likely to be virgin than teen males. And besides, you have to think-if a girl is willing to decade a much older guy, that means she's probably too "experienced" with her age range, and wants an older guy to "teach" her more "moves."

  • When I was a teen in the 1300's, things were wayyyyy different

  • Teens are fucked but they're not getting fucked. I hear ya.

    • This is too funny lol.

  • good take, so true. We produced a generation of pussies. I've been saying this for some time. The girls basketball team when I was a kid WASN'T 100% lesbo and could kick the shit out of today's high school (neutered) boys

  • Aw man, I might not get those 3 blowjobs on my resolution list for 2019?

    • You can always try!

    • true

  • Very good

  • Suicide is also growing in older folks. We’re eating destructive foods, is my opinion. The gut is the key.
