I asked my friends with benefits if sex was all he wanted prior to us having sex and he said yes for now does that mean he might be open to something more later on?

It is hard to say just one question to him. I think you do need to ask more and check signs if he's more than just attracted to you. Here are some signs to know if he likes you.

1. Time is a precious thing. If someone devotes you time, it’s a sign.

2. If someone goes beyond his sexual urges and respects your choices, that’s a big sign.

3. If someone goes out of his way to do the smallest things for you and doesn’t even talk about it, that’s him/her more than liking you.

4. Anyone can talk for hours when they have time or is bored, but someone who respects your nonavailability and waits for you is definitely trying to give you a sign.

5. If someone opens up to you about his dark side, is honest about how he sees life, and talks to you in a polite manner which is unlike him, he is so into you that you can’t even comprehend.

6. If someone makes up names for you to address you and lets you be stupid around him/her, he is definitely into you.

7. He checks up on you constantly and tries to get in touch even when you don’t reply back, Godammit, he definitely likes you.

8. Some people say it out directly, some don’t but if directly or indirectly he wants you to know he will be there for you, he likes you a bit more than you think he does.

Friends with benefits almost never ends without one of them falling in love while the other one doesn't, so it's generally a bad idea and should be avoided. Also, generally sociopaths are the only ones who can use other human beings with such wanton disregard, which is why I guess most people don't do friends with benefits anyway. It's NORMAL and natural to develop feelings for someone you're having sex with!
