The speculum, if it's metal, it's cold and I clinch, if it's plastic, the sound... and the sensation of it opening is awful... and to think my first time it was the stirrups I was afraid of staring at!

I would think that it is something akin to a prostate exam. Less painful, yes, but not that different in psychological effects.

  Its a test to have an early detection on cervical cancer. Its like the one thing they actually use a speculum and literally stick a "scratcher" up your cervix. It is as horrible as it sounds.

  Please get one as soon as possible, especially if you’re sexually active. Although not pleasant by any means, it’s preventative. Not to scare you, but cervical cancer goes undetected in its early stages. That’s why Pap smears are so important.
