Minorities' Dirty Secret - the Oppression and Discrimination of other Minorities

Let me preface this by saying that I'm not a sociologist, or any form of scholar. I do try to study and research as much as I can, but there will be obvious limitations. Now, let's continue.

This is an issue that I've seen in Latino and Black (as well as other minorities) communities for as long as I can remember. It's something that isn't really discussed much. We kind of are taught that white people are our enemies. That they're the reason why we're put down, but growing up I have seen minorities keeping each other down. Don't get it wrong though, this isn't a "aha! It's ok if we treat them that way since they treat each other that way!" Oppression and discrimination of other minorities in the forms of racism and colorism, sexism, and especially anti LGBT+ rhetoric is very prevalent. I sometimes feel as it can't be discussed because then we're labeled as racist if we do. We're also told by other minorities that this discrimination isn't as bad as white discrimination against us.

Please keep in mind that I'm only going to list of examples of discrimination from minorities to other minorities, but it doesn't mean that white people don't do it. I've had many racial interactions with them as well, but I feel that an open minded conversation of minorities oppressing each other is needed.

And they say it's the white man I should fear

Racism and Colorism

Racism is defined as "prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior." We are often taught that white people are the only ones who can be racist, but I don't believe that. I've seen many minorities not only say racist thoughts, but also act on their racism. I have personal stories, but I'll try to list more documented examples. Such as this one, where a black woman told a Mexican man to go back to Mexico and beat him with a brick and a group of men. She was charged with attempted murder, but interestingly enough, not a hate crime, despite yelling racist chants.

I know many Latinos who simply will not date black people. Also many parents who will disown their children if they date outside of their race, but the most common race they'd be disowned for is Black. I have Latino friends who's parents would be livid if they dated black men. There is the racist saying, "Mejorando la Raza" or "improving the race", where basically procreating with people with lighter features improves our race. I've personally seen many friends and even family who have children with white people "over praise" their lighter featured children over their darker featured children.

In Chicago, for some reason there's a long standing feud between Puerto Ricans and Mexicans. It is silly, and I never hated anyone for their nationality. I do remember when I was with my -younger brothers, (we were from like 7-12yrs old) a group of high school teens looked us up and down and said "Eww, Mexicans" and laughed and walked away. They were black and Puerto Rican, I know this because they said things like "boriqua! Wepa" (Boriqua is another word for Puerto Ricans).

When my siblings were growing up, they went to a predominantly black school. They would get teased, bullied and attacked for no reason. The young black children would point at them and say "let's get the Mexicans", and they'd get jumped. They'd be called beaners, spics, wetbacks etc. They'd make fun of them for speaking Spanish. The bullying was so bad, they'd want skip class because even the teachers were black and did very little to discipline the students.

I remember telling my black friend that "mayate" (pronounced "mah-yah-teh") is a Spanish slur that equates to "nigger", and seeing the look in his face of realization how many racists Latinos he's encountered was heart breaking.

Minorities' Dirty Secret - the Oppression and Discrimination of other Minorities

Colorism is defined as "prejudice or discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone, typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group." Racism and colorism go hand in hand, but I personally don't think they're the same. Racism is from other groups, colorism is from in your group.

An example I have seen of this is #TeamDarkSkin vs #TeamLightSkin which is usually from Black communities. This is basically pitting darker skinned individuals against lighter skinned. For a long time though, dark skin people would get mocked within the black community. "Nappy" hair, "kitchens" etc are terms shaming hair, usually natural afro hair.

Colorism also exists in other communities. Skin bleaching is very popular in Asian countries like India, Korea, many countries in Africa, and even Latin American countries. Many darker people are made to feel inferior and thus, bleach their skin.

In Latin American culture, I know when I turn on Novelas (spanish soap operas), I almost always saw extremely pale people as the protagonists, and the dark skin people were either the maids/janitors, poor people, or the antagonists.

Minorities' Dirty Secret - the Oppression and Discrimination of other Minorities

Sexism

I've already spoke on the sexism in especially Latino cultures thanks to Machismo, so I'll only mention it briefly. In many Latino families, the males are often seen as the prized gender. This is also true for many Africans as well as Asians and middle eastern cultures. Although I'm mostly focusing on issues of the US, around the world, we are aware that females are often treated more unjustly than males. From China with their female infanticides, many middle eastern/muslim as well as African countries practicing female genital mutilation (I'm against male circumcision as well, but it's not as bad as FGM). Now, y'all may wonder why does this matter if we're focusing on the US? Well, when these cultures come to the US, they bring their values with them. And they don't always align with western ideals.

In fact, many females in the US were subjected to FGM. When cultures come to the US, they don't always assimilate, and those born into these communities are still instilled values from the motherland.

Rap and street culture also loves to insult women. I never understood why slurs against women such as bitch, slut, thot, bustdown, etc were so widely popular. Both the man and woman are participating in the same acts in the song, but he's a pimp while she's a hoe?

Minorities' Dirty Secret - the Oppression and Discrimination of other Minorities

Anti LGBT+

This is what got Kevin Hart in trouble. Anti LGBT is extremely prevalent in many black and Latino cultures. There are many instances of anti LGBT+ not only thoughts and individual behaviors but also laws in non white and/or Islam countries, and honestly it would take up a lot of this section if I included it, so I'll focus more on US specific cases again.

This is something I've personally seen so many times. It is all over rap music.Another common thing in rap music is to use slurs like faggot, tranny, etc. It is looked down in a lot of Latino music as well. It is also something that for some reason, isn't talked about enough. I'm not sure why many especially black trans activists don't call out the seemingly ingrained anti LGBT+ views of minority cultures. According to PRI; muslims 34% opposed same sex marriage, blacks protestants at 43%, and hispanic protestants at 45%, - and they're the highest numbers of racial and religious groups.

I am a tomboy, and I dress like a male a lot. I would be walking down the streets and have people yell "dike" or "marimacha" (Spanish for "butch", often used in derogatory manners). Personally, I have family members who would beat their sons if they were to be gay. In fact, my older brother got into a fist fight with my sister because she placed her 1yr old son in a lavender walker because he said that it'd make him gay.

Many people believe being killed for being gay is only done in the middle east (like this case). However, it happens here in the US too, like this boy who was tortured and killed by a mother and her boyfriend because they believed he was gay. Another young boy, was also abused and killed by his mother and boyfriend because he came out as gay.The amount of homophobia and hyper-masculinity in Latino cultures is so prevalent, that little boys are punished for simply touching dolls.

Lesbian women are, however, a bit more accepted than gay men. My brother doesn't have a daughter, but I asked him if he'd be ok if she were to be lesbian. He said yes, but no gay sons. In fact, he'd prefer if his imaginary daughter were lesbian and never date men. I asked him, what's so bad about men or dicks that you don't want your (imaginary) daughter or (real) sons near them?

Minorities' Dirty Secret - the Oppression and Discrimination of other Minorities

But it isn't just gay people who are abused in minority communities, trans people are also vulnerable. Black trans people have the highest rate of violence perpetrated against them. So far, there have been 25 trans people killed, 2017 was one of the worst years with 29 tracked deaths according to HRC. Of those 25 slain, so far, 20 were black. Many of these murders are still unsolved, but so far 3 of the aggressors are black, 2 are Hispanic, and 2 are white. Many of the black trans victims however, lived in majority black communities, so it is likely that their aggressors shared the same race as them (as with other crimes).

I'm not sure where to list this, but it's also an issue with the LGBT+ community. They have higher rates of domestic violence compared to heterosexual and cisgender couples.

Minorities' Dirty Secret - the Oppression and Discrimination of other Minorities

What Can be Done?

Now, please don't read this and think that any oppression or injustice from majority groups to minorities is "justified". Also, again, don't think that just because I didn't list let's say white discrimination over minorities, that I don't believe it happens. It does, but as I stated, it has been addressed thoroughly enough by others. I don't see a lot of discussions surrounding how many minority cultures have their/our own issues discriminating against other minorities. I feel that they should because as we can see, there is a lot that can be done to repair our communities.

This isn't an exhaustive list at all. There are many other documented examples as well as personal experiences. I just skimmed the surface of a lot of issues that need solutions. I personally think that we ourselves (as those in said identity groups) have to first acknowledge it exists, and then we have to solve them within our communities. One controversial solution is to more properly assimilate. Many of the discriminatory actions we subjugate other minorities to are because in our ancestral lands, it's how it is over there. However, there's a reason why our parents, grandparents or ourselves are fleeing those lands. I always found it hypocritical of us to be hyper critical of whites discriminating against us, yet we do it gladly to other minorities as well.

As I said, I'm not a sociologist, and keep in mind I'm not a conservative, I don't support Trump (for some reason, when I mention these issues, I'm labeled right wing, "coconut" which is white on the inside brown on the outside - essentially the Latino version of coon). I don't know many solutions to this other than assimilating and for us to value the idea that we're all equal. A lot of these issues could also be solved "from the outside" - like legislation to protect vulnerable groups were passed and enforced. Things like LGBT+ protection laws, prohibiting FGM and child marriage with the excuse of religion, etc.

I hope I don't get my "Latino card" revoked for this lol jk, I've already got it revoked many times before. I just want our communities to grow and heal. I know it's hard to break cycles of hate and oppression, but we're doing it to fellow minorities, while complaining when those in power do it to us. Hate from any direction or group to any direction of group should not be tolerated if we're truly going to progress as a society.

  • I agree. In my country, Philippines there's a lot of colourism and even racism. Many Filipinos look down on people with darker skin tone. There is also a discrimination against the native indigenous Filipinos, the Aeta people. They're often in poverty and the society brush them aside. They're marginalised.

Also the constant making fun of the Indians in Philippines. They're mocked as "Bumbay", stereotyped as selling cheap things, loan sharks, and would kidnap you.

However what I said isn't really suited in your MyTake because many of the discriminated in Philippines are minorities. Except the colourism part.

    • I learned "Bumbay" from Russell Peters.

    • @dantetheexplorer lol what he all said was true by the way. It's funny.

    • It is suited. I didn't mention too much on Asians or middle eastern cultures, but a lot of them tend to be anti dark/black. Also, I'm not too familiar with them. But if I spoke on how specific countries have discriminatory laws and practices, this take would never end lol

  • Powerful, powerful, powerful read.
    I can't say it enough.
Power inequality, prejudice, ignorance, discrimination and hate are commonplace in every country and culture sadly.

We have a say in my country - "Tutto il mondo è paese" - "The whole world is a big town".
This Take demonstrates it very well.

    • Thank you very much, I appreciate your kind words :)

    • 👍👍👍 It was really a thoughtful and articulated read. It gave me a lot to think about. Keep up the good work!

  • I agree with you 100%. I'm dominican (and I live in the DR), and colorism, racism, machismo and homophobia are pretty much normalized here. It's a living hell. The thing is, people love pointing out what others are doing wrong, and ignore their own mistakes.

    • Exactly this! I was in a foster home with a Dominican family, but I forgot to mention why do they kinda feud with Puerto Ricans? At least in Chicago they seemed to. I also read somewhere that they make fun of Haitians a lot. I honestly hate how much racism there is in Mexican cultures. I've been around other Latinos and then I realized it's not just us (Mexicans), there's pride and prejudice nearly everywhere.

    • I've never understood the thing with puerto ricans, either. Maybe it's just competition because both cultures are ridiculously similar. We're like twins lol. And it breaks my heart the way some dominicans treat and talk about haitians. But they never admit it's racism. I mean it has a lot to do with our history with Haiti but most of the time it's just racism.

    • I was the same way. I thought it was just Dominicans then I realized that other countries discriminate indigenous people and call them "negros" or "prietos" in a derogatory way. Makes my blood boil.

  • Really good take, a lot of people are t aware of this kind of thing.

My girlfriend lived in Cuba for a few months for this kind of spiritual initiation in this Caribbean religion she and her father are part of. She stayed with a host family that she became very close with (even though her father had to translate a lot, haha). I was very surprised when she returned and told me what Cuba was actually like, because in America, we get sold the ugliest version of the story.

For whatever reason, America has decided that communism is “bad for business” and feels the need to defame any country that operates under such a system, despite having ZERO effect on us. I guess the threat is that Americans will see it and start wanting it, I don’t know, haha, or it roots back to the Cold War and the fear that Russia would make alliances with a fellow communist country right offshore from us. But I’m not so sure “helping people” in other countries has ever been the sole motivation for our military involvement, whether we’re talking slavery in the Civil War, the Nazis in World War 2, or South Vietnam in the Vietnam War... it ultimately comes down geopolitical and economic interests, under the guise of “look what nice and righteous people we are!” There are plenty of people struggling across the world, but oddly enough, we only get involved in certain places with certain regimes running things. Not saying all the communist countries are in good shape, I’m just saying that if you think the American government is like “we need to help those poor suffering people”, you have a lot of growing up to do, lmao. I believe that plenty of military personnel may have that attitude, but the people at the top who they ultimately get their orders from do not.

So back to Cuba... the reason I brought it up was I never realized there was internal racism. But there was A LOT under US-backed Fulgencio Batista, who in his own right was a terrible guy, but all we hear about in America is Fidel Castro. Again, bad for business. So my girlfriend found that light-skinned Cubans, the ones who ultimately left for the US, who I always pictured in my mind when you said “Cuban”, many were very racist against the dark-skinned Cubans. Per wikipedia: “Back in power, and receiving financial, military, and logistical support from the United States government, Batista suspended the 1940 Constitution and revoked most political liberties, including the right to strike. He then aligned with the wealthiest landowners who owned the largest sugar plantations, and presided over a stagnating economy that widened the gap between rich and poor Cubans. Eventually it reached the point where most of the sugar industry was in U. S. hands, and foreigners owned 70% of the arable land. As such, Batista's repressive government then began to systematically profit from the exploitation of Cuba's commercial interests, by negotiating lucrative relationships with both the American Mafia, who controlled the drug, gambling, and prostitution businesses in Havana, and with large U. S.-based multinational companies who were awarded lucrative contracts. To quell the growing discontent amongst the populace—which was subsequently displayed through frequent student riots and demonstrations—Batista established tighter censorship of the media, while also utilizing his Bureau for the Repression of Communist Activities secret police to carry out wide-scale violence, torture and public executions; ultimately killing anywhere from hundreds to 20,000 people.” Doesn’t sound like a very admirable guy to me, but the US supported him and decried Castro, who in fairness did his own killing, but that’s what happens in a revolution. Shit, we killed a bunch of English guys simply because we paid taxes but couldn’t get a Parliamentary rep, and we set off fireworks and have BBQs every July 4th to celebrate.

Anyway, went off on a tangent about Cuba lmao, but the point is: don’t believe the hype. Might need a take on this🤔

  • Well statistically speaking the majority of discrimination comes from minorities in the US with blacks commiting 2x as many hate crimes as whites (blacks make up 12.8% of the population but 24.3% of all hate crime offenders, Hispanics are 17% of the population and commit 8.8% of hate crimes and whites make up 63% and make up 50.7%(however I do have issue with the number with whites as frequently white and latino are conflated in much of the data so I do not know if the 8.8% comes out of that or not, however beyond that the data is from the FBI and should be fairly accurate.) as well as having the largest hate group in the US (black seperatists) despite their substantially smaller population size. Also if a black girl dates a white guy, that's a huge problem in the black community. I am not suggesting whites are beyond racism only that in a society that only acknowledges racism from whites will naturally suffer from other groups being more racist as they are not being called out for it which allows it to perpetuate. I would also point out that male circumcision is as bad as female circumcision (you refused to call it female circumcision, either its genital mutilation or its circumcision, by giving them two different names you are suggesting they are two different things, they are not) with the exception of the much rarer removal of the entire outer vaginal and clitoral tissue (despite popular claims, the clitoris is not removed just the outer portion of it (its several inches long and has stirrups that hang around the vaginal canal). But then by that measure we would also have to point out that aboriginal tribes in Australia have a male circumcision ritual that involves the male kneeling on a shield over a fire while being circumcised and while dilerious with pain is then forced to eat it, then he is allowed to heal from it after a couple of weeks at which point he does the ritual all over again except this time they bisect his penis (think split hotdog). So that is also rare but equally bad so this whole idea that women have it worse in this regard (especially considering that its far more common to have male circumcision/mutilation and that in every community that has female circumcision they also practices male circumcision) is simply false. Also again, we are talking about this in a society that allows mothers to circumcise male infants against their will (and up until about fifteen years ago or so without anesthetic) while also making it entirely illegal to do to women is kind of an absurd complaint. That said, yes racism should be called out where ever you find it, not just when its a white person doing it to a non white person (minority/majority is misleading as whites are only a majority in white nations, in South Africa for instance the government and country is mostly black and they are stealing land from white farmers without compensation and their is currently been a slow genocide against whites in that country so calling the whites in south Africa as majority or blacks as minority would be misleading and false), nor should it be only when its a black person or Hispanic person discriminating against a Hispanic person or black person but even when they are racist towards a white person (which you really didn't focus on at all which could be construed as "racist" as you seem to prioritize discrimination against "minorities" more then when its done to whites suggesting that your still kind of fine with it (not saying you are just that this is the impression one could get from this). Otherwise yes, this is something that needs to be acknowledged in order for it to be resolved.

    • You started off great, then you went off on an unrelated tangent.

    • @WalterRadio What tangent was that? The gender one? Because its a flawed argument she presented (yet one that gets peddled frequently and quite frankly it needs to be corrected (false information spreads like the plague).

  • I'm so glad you shared this Take, because this echos what I've noticed.

I've came across several African-Americans who hate when they're compared to Latino immigrants. They say "we didn't come here by choice, and those wetbacks did", and other derogatory statements. On the other hand, I've heard Latinos claim that "blacks make themselves the victim", and they're "deadbeat dads", and other nonsense as well.

I think the biggest takeaway is many black, and latino thoughts on the LGBT community. I teach at a high school where 99 percent of the population identifies as African-American, and they make some disgusting comments regarding the LGBT community-so, it's not just the "old people" like people think.

  • These replies make me want to shoot myself. This is an interesting - if not necessarily novel - take. If I may make a suggestion, keeping your points more concise and readable will slow the influx of people feeling reaffirmed by their toxic states of mind after reading the first paragraph.

    • I know what you mean. I did try to shorten it, and I considered breaking it into parts because people rarely read everything and then they comment. And I'm like "I addressed that, if you read past the first paragraph"... Thank you, I'll keep that in mind for future takes. I'm on another one that I'm already breaking into parts because it's a big issue lol

  • From what I can tell, in the US, blacks are the most racist. Chinese are the second most racist, but only against blacks.

Percentage wise, it seems whites are the least racist against all other races, although Asians in general are not very racist against whites, mostly it is against blacks and other types of Asians.

    • Blacks are most racist against who?

    • Against whites mostly.

    • Come to think of it, the only people that have ever hurtled a racial slur towards me are black, maybe 20 times in my life. I was concerned some were going to chase me and beat me for being white. (Gweilo isn't racist anymore).

  • A real mess, isn't it. Sometimes I just want to move to some ranch in Montana and forget about it.

  • Sadly, I believe some of us in the black community and and other minorities have ALLOWED non-black individuals who do carry hate, to brainwash us or make us carry a certian thinking. If someone were to come attack or make fun of me for being so tall, it would all be up to me on if I CHOOSE to believe and constantly carry that thought. I learned that if you want to change your emotions you have to change what you think on. I feel like it all revolves around the mind.
One or some black girls on gag here for example seem to be carrying this belief that "the world is against us" that she's is ugly because of how she was born black, and I believe one even said something about believing to be mentally disabled or sick because she was born black... Lol, I'm starting to think some of these girls are looking up insane racist video's, topics, or websites online and meditating on it.

Our actions revolve around what we choose to think or focus on. What we focus on we can give strength to. So I agree that some are simply putting each other down.
Things like this make me want to study psychology. It's quite amazing how one's character and actions can all change on what they choose to put there focus on.

Also I don't support LBGT. not out of hating the individual, I just don't support it because tbe God I believe in and choose to follow doesn't and see's it as part of sin. I don't think they should be bullied, physically attacked or killed, my gosh there people. I think there is nothing wrong with simply believing it's wrong or disagreeing with it, however I don't believe disrespectful words, like the ones I believe you gave an example with, and harm should be given to these people.

  • Sorry to say this but this mytake is bring out all the neo-Nazis out of the woodwork. I understand calling out other cultures and I am a huge Bill Burr fan but let them do it themselves if you don't know how. I certainly call out Desi people out on it.
Also another solution: Star Trek. Seriously just watch TNG and DS9(skip season 1 and half of season 2 of both). They tackle these issues EXTREMELY well. Asian, Latino and black people NEED to watch this show like white people did.

    • Well, I'm Latina so I did call out my culture. I call it out a lot.

  • Yes it is absolutely crazy how many minority’s refuse to see their b. s and love to be victims against whites but they are no better when they are oppressing the darker or homosexual ones of their group and that’s what it usually is. I’m happy with how minorités are clumped together like we all faced the same oppressors and which is not true. That’s why we shouldn’t be called poc. We need to recognize historical on why we have these prejudice thoughts and actions against our “allies”. We need to also stop blaming it on the white man or racism and white supremacy.
