Most likely he feels insecure about it; society tells men that penis size is INCREDIBLY important to women. In reality, it's more important to men (and that's purely in a social sense; I don't know much gay guys care about it sexually), and even there, it's hardly the be-all end-all. But if it works, it's all to the good- it'll let you get the job done, it'll help him relax into being around you, and it'll show him that you're willing to go the extra mile for his sake. The goal is to build trust and comfort.
Penile size is way more important to men than women! For women it may just be the quality of sex.
