My Parents and I: Different Ends of the Job Spectrum (A Personal Story)

Things Society Claims (Consciously or Otherwise)- "You get a good job if you work hard." "Go to college. Get yourself a proper job." "I worked hard, that's why I'm where I'm at time."

The older I've gotten, the more I see that this isn't necessarily true. I'm going to give you a story of two people, one a parent, one a kid. I'm not going to tell you which one is which. He/she came from a communist country, technical education was not per own ambition, that was just the high school he happened to go to. He/she failed a number of classes in high school, average to below-average work ethic. He/she worked in industry.

He/she moved to this country in the 1970's with technical school background. He/she got job working for company, claimed to be a skilled __________ professional, had some similar skills, but was not entirely true. He/she walks down ONE street, and finds 4-5 open positions with decent pay.

Individual 1

He/she works for _____________ company, makes good money. He/she receivedsincentive to go back to school for/from company, company's idea. Company covers FULL cost of school, as long as a GPA of C or above is mentioned. Job promotion will ensue, once school is completed, says compant. He/she went to school (similar to engineering school). He/she drops out, can't cope with emotional loss of ex. He/she still gets promotion. He/she has been working at the same company for 37 years, makes an average of 95,000-106,000 a year. He/she almost never works over time, 8 years a day, 7 days a week. It's an office job. Company was sold a few years. He/she makes comments like, "I have to do more stuff now and I don't like it, but it's not like I'm killing myself." (He/she actually has to answer own e-mails and phone calls, since company was sold. Previously secretaries wrote all e-mails and answered nearly all phone calls.) He/she believes his/her success is a result of his hard work. Company takes age and desire for retirement into consideration, e.g. would transfer rather than fire, should company branch go under. He/she does not know how to make a resume and can barely spell.

Individual 2

Circa 2000's-

He/she worked hard in school, took mostly AP classes, 4-6 hours homework per night on average. He/she starts college with a semester of classes already completed. He/she graduates with 2 degrees in 4 years, magna cum laude. He/she gets job in teaching industry, first year below poverty line, (only job available)to earn experience. (He/she applied for 20+ jobs). He/she works 65-75 hours a week. He/she gets injured after one year on the job, unable to keep up with job demands. Company threatens to fire he/she if he/she doesn't resign. He/she now lives in chronic pain. Above parent claims he/she "hasn't worked hard enough. Just didn't like previous job, etc., etc." "It's not convenient for me to help you out. When I was your age, I could support myself. I worked hard."

Which individual worked harder? Which individual deserves a decent salary if you had to pick one? Who thinks the person in paragraph #2 didn't work hard enough. Luck and circumstance play a larger part than people think. Hard work is not necessarily enough. Life is not fair. Those who think they're lives are fair because things have worked out for them do not understand that they have experienced a great stroke of luck, though they may or may not possess other talents.
