Humans (homo sapiens) have existed at least 350,000-500,000 years - and some recent evidence suggests at least the possibility that it could be longer than that. But civilization is quite new in relative terms - agriculture is only 10,000 years old, and that's what allowed people to live in one place all year long - prior to that, humans were forced to migrate with their food sources twice a year. And even then, the first civilizations were "city-states" - a city where a society could develop, with rules and some means of enforcement, and where there were fixed markets for goods and services. But this means that "civilization" only really existed in these small areas of a city, and only in a couple of cities across the world at any one time. The vast majority of the world remained tribal and had to migrate with the seasons.

The result of all of this is that human lifespans were short for most of human history. The average lifespan was under 40 years of age - people who were in their late 30s were "old and wise", and people who lived into their 50s and 60s were rare and often revered as "tribal elders" or "wise men."

And so it was completely normal for people to couple off - which eventually became marriage in one form or another - at what we would today consider very young ages. When a girl started to have her period, she was considered a woman, because it was understood that she could bear children - and children were EVERYTHING. Men typically had a "rite of passage" - some kind of test of manhood - that they had to pass at some point between the age of 12-16, and if they passed, they were considered to be men, and "moved out" and had to take care of themselves. It also meant he could pick a wife, who he was also responsible for taking care of.

And this was just a natural extension of what was happening without the organization of a society - all the various tribes of people working to scratch out a life from the world they lived in, full of disease, accidents, predators, bad weather, and famines.

There was often a shortage of young men, because guess who went to war? Young men, for the most part, and they were the ones most likely to die. But young men also frequently died farming, mining, sailing/fishing, and traveling for trade purposes. This meant that there were excess women, and their fathers were often too old to care for them by the time they were teens, or might have been killed or maimed along the way. Women simply could not survive on their own in most cases, so excess women were married off to men who could protect and provide for them - even if he already had a wife. Plural marriage was quite common.

Chances are, if you research your own relatives, and you look at generations before WWII, you'll find that your great grandmothers (and the generations before them) all got married at 15 or 16, and occasionally you'll have one that married at 13 or 14. That was ALWAYS the norm, for all of history, until after WWII. The huge spending on WWII led to huge advances in medicine (needed to treat war wounds and diseases), and this led to huge increases in health and lifespans in the 1950s and 60s, and so a generation later (GenX), the age of marriage began to increase, and it has continued to increase ever since.

But today's "norm" is NOT the norm - it's very much the exception, and compared to half a million years of history, it's less than a blink of time.

To confess. I want to have sex with many beautiful women. Yet, there's one that keeps sticking to me. One that really sticks is 20 years old. I keep telling myself I'm stupid and have to stop. That is the way the male sex drive was made. Youth and beauty = fertility. It makes men horny for young women so that they can reproduce healthy offspring. An older woman has more chances of having congenital disabilities. But men's sperm stays good until around 70 years. I know a guy who is 56, his girlfriend is 23, and he has healthy children. He married late.

It’s not actually about the sex. Younger women are more open, giving and enthusiastic about life, and men. Their energy is positive and infectious. By contrast older women are vampires, draining. Too often jaded and extremely demanding. They have little to offer for as much as they expect in return. The real question is why do young men like older women? Ell oh ell!
