You can possibly get an infection yes because the inner walls of the vagina are very sensitive and if you are not well lubricated, you increase the risk of micro tears in the walls and therefore an increased risk of infection.
Now, if you washed your hands beforehand and that you trimmed your nails to be smooth and have no cutting, sharp or uneven edges and that you thoroughly cleaned under your nails with soap and water, then you should have no risk of having hurt yourself.
It is all a question of proper hygiene. However, a great number of people disregard that point and insert just about anything into places they should not.
If you keep a minimum of hygiene and wash your hands normally with soap and water, then you are safe.

Generally, an infection will start within 24 hours and the symptoms are bleeding from having opened the wall. However, be cautious not to mix up a bacterial infection caused by unclean hands with an infection caused by a yeast infection. A bacterial infection cause by insertion of inappropriate devices would be a localized pain in the area and like for any bacterial infection, a sensation of abnormal heat emanating from the wounded area. Should that be the case, then you have to see a GP or obgyn so that he/she can prescribe you some antibiotics. Caution though, antibiotics only work against bacterial infections and NOT against viral infections. But all in all, I believe that you should be okay.
