When same sex couples get married does one of them take the other's last name? I'm just asking out of curiosity.
Same sex marraige is a relatively new thing. I think they are still trying to work out the dynamics of it all. When my girlfriend and I were talking about it we couldn't decide whether to just keep our own last names, hyphenate a mixer of her last name and mine which ever sounded better, invent a new last name for us both, keep our last name and just add the others last name before the other's or one of us just take the others last name. The only same sex couples I know with the same last name had kids.
When I married my husband I took his last name, it just felt right.1 0 0 0Well, if there are kids in the picture it makes more sense for both adults to have the same last name. it's less confusing.
Especially when travelling with kids. If your kid has a last name not your own and maybe you aren't the biological parent it can cause problems. It will be interesting to see what way gay marraige works out in the long run, we've been trying to apply Hetrosexual norms to gay marraige, relationships and having kids but it maybe just doesn't line up exactly the same in general. A friend of mine after her marraige broke down with her ex wife spoke about the 2 kids they had, she had a child and her ex had a child and though she loved her ex's child and vice versa the other child never felt like it was hers, she wasn't it's mother and she wasn't it's father, instead she felt more like a stepmother or aunt to the other child than a mother and their kids were more like friendsthan siblings. Apperently the divorce and custody was a nightmare with both of them looking to keep full custody of their biological children as well as looking for alimony and child support and someone else told me that both of them were claiming to be the victim of domestic abuse.
smh. that more drama then I want to deal with.
I think that depends on their relationship. You can dictate this in heterosexual marriages too.

Mostly they don't. Many heterosexual couples don't change their names.
