Sexual Misconduct at Work

Sexual Misconduct at Work

For decades we’ve been hearing about sexual harassment and misconduct in the workplace. These are some stories of workplace sexual goings-on that I have witnessed.

In the 70s, I worked in a retail store similar to Kmart. One of the people I worked with was a young woman named Lynne. She was in her early 20s, friendly, and we got along well. Her husband didn’t work there, but he was a cool guy, and I talked to him a couple of times. Lynne had some really huge boobs, but she was very self-conscious about it, always kept everything covered up, and didn’t like hearing any comments, dirty jokes, etc. I was ok with that, out of respect for her, but we had an assistant manager who was a world class harasser. He was always flirting, dropping lewd comments, and groping just about every female employee that worked there, and of course, Lynne was one of his targets. By the way, he was nothing to look at. He was fat, bald, and wore leisure suits.

One day, this manager felt her up, and she hauled off and punched him. She then got really upset, and had to take some time off in the lunchroom. I just happened to be coming in for lunch, and saw her sitting there crying. I tried to cheer her up some, but she was still upset, told me what was going on, and said she was quitting. That asshole upset a friend of mine, and I liked him even less. In the 70s, people could get away with this kind of shit.

About a week after Lynne quitting, she showed up to pick up her last paycheck. She brought her husband along, just in case there was any trouble. The manager hid in his office, and refused to open the door, but he slid Lynne’s final paycheck through under the crack in the door. When I heard that story, I thought, “WHAT a fuckin’ COWARD!”.

The next time I came across sexual misbehavior at work was in the 80s. I was a civilian working on computer systems on a military base, and we were having computer systems and work from another base being moved and merged with our systems on our base. A woman from the other base was with us for a while to coordinate the process, and in the room she was assigned to, she put up half naked male centerfolds up on all of the walls. It was wall-to-wall hunks. I personally didn’t care, but I thought it was interesting that she was allowed to do this. If I had a room full of half naked female centerfolds up on the walls, I probably would have been raked over the coals. On our base we were always getting emails and mandatory classes about not doing inappropriate sexual things at work, no surfing the net on work time, no looking at porn, etc. I’m sure this woman’s base would have had the same procedures.

In the 90s, I was still working at this same base, and one day, all of us accidentally got an email that was intended to just be sent between one manager to another. This email had a link to a video showing a man doggy screwing a woman while using her back as a table for his beer. Then another man in front of the woman was also reaching for that beer. The video was funny, but it’s a bit hypocritical for management to get after us about using government equipment and time for goofing off, looking at porn, concerns about hacking, downloading viruses, etc, while THEY THEMSELVES are doing it! Personally, I was too busy all day just to even LOOK at my OFFICIAL emails! This was just one email of this type that accidentally got out to us, and makes me wonder what else management was looking at. Was this just one isolated incident, or just the tip of an iceberg we can't see?

I have since retired, but it wouldn’t surprise me if these kinds of things were still going on.

  • Great take. Harassment in the workplace whether it's sexual, verbal, or physical assault should not be taken lightly and there should be consequences for anyone who engages in such whether it's the boss or employee.

I had an abusive boss earlier this year that would insult me, scream at me, and berate me in front of the entire office over the smallest things instead of calling me into the office and used threats of firing and negative reinforcement as a form of motivation.

I know this is not sexual harrassment but it is still harrassment and causes a toxic/hostile work environment. It was so bad that getting fired was a blessing in disguise.

    • That's the sign of a manager that doesn't know how to manage. The best managers are the kind that have their employees doing things for them just because they WANT to do things for the boss, not because they're threatened.

    • Given the kinda industry it was, it wasn't surprising to have the manager be the way he was. The job was selling title loans which is essentially predatory lending. So I guess it kinda fits under the whole "Loan Shark" term. Still a bad management practice. I felt like I was walking on eggshells constantly which was very unhealthy and stressful. It gave me so much anxiety, stress, and depression. I would go into work and try to do my job and then feel like I'm stepping on a landmine by having my boss sneak up on me and scream at me for making a very small mistake.

    • Even when we would be making calls, the boss would stop us and say close these loans or don't work here or yell at us to get on the phones WHILE we would be making phone calls. Just thinking of that place gives me nightmares.
