They can, it is a situational question. Some friendships your so open and talk about anything, can talk about the hookup I had last night with someone and if he asked if I wanted to hook up with him I'd usually say no, cause I don't want to ruin our friendship but if it was strong enough I might.

Either way, it is entirely possible to be friends after that... define what you mean by just friends though? plenty of people are just friends who sometimes have sex, while still trying to set the other up on blind dates and talk about their sexual exploits and such.
