Should Porn be banned from society?

According to a recent interview, a few former pornstars including Lana Rhoades claims that she thinks porn should be banned. So let’s look at it objectively, should we ban it? If we did, what would that better for society?

I’m personally supportive of it but I’m willing to play devil’s advocate against my own perspective just to see what would happen in that scenario.

I don't for a moment doubt that the pornography industry is exploitative and honestly this is something that needs to be confronted and dealt with. But simply writing a law to ban something doesn't mean it will go away. It just means that producing porn will become harder in some respects. People who are determined to produce and consume porn will find ways to do it, and the exploitation will continue.

The other thing is that discussing exploitation in the context of porn is inherrently difficult. Is exploitation when you make someone work without pay? Obviously yes. But what if the pay is perceived as inadequate or paid late? Or if the pornstar is signed up for scenes that make them feel uncomfortable but are offered an attractive bonus to seal the deal?

Personally I think we should focus on harm reduction as well as better understanding the impact of porn on society. In future, it is likely that pornstars will be replaced overtime with AI generated images and videos. This will focus the risk more on the consumer than the performer, as AI algorithms exert more and more influence on our sex lives.

Lana is a millionaire because of her career, but is upset that it all came at a price. I think I would support the band. While there has been interesting and somewhat helpful information as a result of pornography, that has no doubt given couples new ideas, I’d like to think that as humans we would eventually think of some of these things/techniques ourselves.

I think if pornography were banned, there may be a bit more privacy in peoples bedrooms, and perhaps better attitudes towards each other sexually.

As of now online porn is an industry worth billions of dollars and it's a major addiction for a hell of a lot of people. Some Americans get boiling mad just at the thought of losing access to semi-automatic weapons. You don't want to see the backlash if the government actually tried to put a ban on porn. People would lose their damn minds because they are legitimately addicted at this point.

I was one who thought that porn should've never made it to the internet where it became so mainstream and easy for kids to access. It had less impact on society when it was just on pay-per view and porn channels in the 90's, but now it's everywhere all the time.

That being said, I do enjoy porn now because there's so much of it that you can literally find anything you like. It can also take the place of a relationship for many people. Whether that's good or bad is up to the individual to decide.

I don't think porn adds positive value to our culture, just as certain types of hate speech do not help us, BUT. . . if we start banning certain forms of expression based on the particular content, we are starting a process that can lead to the elimination of free speech. The best way to not slide down that path is to nover take even one step down the slippery slope.

No. Because some depressed people need their Soma to manage through this terrible life we live in. If finding love was easy and being depressed was rare, then yeah, maybe ban porn then. But until we reach Utopian levels, I say let depressed people have their porn, weed, alcohol, and fast food. And I don't even watch or like porn, mind you. The only thing banning porn would do is push it under ground where most of it already is.
