Should rapists be castrated?

Back in ancient Rome, Rapists were castrated by having their testicles smashes between two rocks in front of a huge crowd. Even though it was a capital punishment, it still had a significant impact. Do you think the same should be followed on the modern Era to help conquer the problem

  • No because sexual assault is more complex than that. The people most likely to rape you are your family, close friends, and your partner. In spite of the abuse they've suffered, many victims are already very unlikely to report these people because of the ties they have to them.
Often especially in the case of rape within relationships, the person doesn't even think what they're doing is rape, they've learned that it's acceptable.
There's already immense victim blaming, eg. women who come forward to report rape being shamed for 'ruining the rapist's life', accused of lying, etc. Imagine how that would intensify if the punishment were that severe, and how many fewer rapes would be reported. Not because they weren't happening but because of fear of the backlash associated with reporting it.
And, obviously, there's always the chance you could castrate the wrong person, in the case of mistaken identity or false rape claims.

  • There's such a thing as chemical castration nowadays, I think both pedophiles and rapists should receive that. Or at least get put on some type of medication that lowers their testosterone so that they're less aggressive.

    • But do you think that would make him more violent?

    • Also, the thing about this punishment is that it would only punish male rapists and pedophiles, there's no way to make that an equal punishment for female criminals. Cutting off the clit wouldn't have the same effect as cutting off the balls. I think they should be removed from society for the rest of their lives, there's no chance for redemption for them.

    • OK now you have confused me completely. So they should just be thrown out? They have another 140 countries to carry on with their activities

  • That won't give me what I lost back. That won't do anything to make me feel better.

    ... don't understand it.

  • Physical punishment is not something for a civilized society. If a rapist asks himself for something like chemical castration, then I would find it acceptable to lower his punishment, issue is of course that when he stops the medication he’ll be back to ‘normal’ afterwards. I would then propose like a monthly follow-up by a docter to make sure his hormone levels are down. I would not like the idea of a volontary castration, people will do anything to get out of jail. And I dislike projects whereby prisoners get early release for things like volontary sterilization.

  • I know people will disagree but if in this case a woman was raped, I'd say she should/would be granted the choice to smash the rapists testicles themselves (not that it makes up for the trauma they'd have suffered but I'd hope it might make them feel a bit better). And although most rape victims are women, what would you propose if a man had been raped by a woman? Last time I checked you ladies don't have testicles to smash with rocks. Im not trying to flip this I'm just interested what women may think as well

  • Anyone who would think this is a decent thing in modern society has serious problems. If someone punches someone should we cut off their hands as well?

If someone is sick enough to rape someone, whether you 'castrate' them or not, they're still able to assault people in other ways. And I love how you've made it a thing unique to males by only punishing males. Women are more than capable of sexual assault, but last time I checked, you can't smash their balls.

  • Rapists and pedophiles

    • No! Paedophiles don't all commit crimes and aren't automatically a threat to children. If they do anything or it seems like they will then action should definitely be taken but how would you even define a paedophile who deserves it? Its not like they'll come forward. The idea of a paedophile in your mind is clearly someone who has already committed a crime

    • @Cammy137 Offending pedophiles who have actually acted on their desires should be. Non-offenders who are actively resisting their desires are simply innocent people with an unfortunate mental illness.

    • @DawnToDusk Exactly! You worded that in a much better way than I did

  • Absolutely.
Though, there are more civil and modern methods of emasculating a man. You only need to decrease the amount of hormones his testicles produce, though removal is the most absolute means.

    • Wow. This is by far the most descriptive opinion. Thank you for sharing. But can you tell us the ways of doing it.

  • No, that would be a violation of the 8th amendment, that being, cruel and unusual punishments. This would definitely fall into that category. There are better methods and more civilized ones that will deter these future crimes better than castration. Honestly, there's nothing logical about this, it's just anger and an emotional response to something bad. You know nothing good has really come by that.

  • And yet they forgave the rape of the Sabine women... but seriously, I think it's a great idea, provided there are safeguards in place to ensure that innocent men didn't get punished.
