With good birth control methods, meaning a birth control implant that works for several years, the pill, or an IUD, the chance of becoming pregnant is less than 0.01 percent.
For a very small percentage of women, the former methods cannot be used. So barrier methods, which have a high percentage of failure: 20 to 30 percent when used alone, say a condom, or spermicide, when COMBINED, have about a 5% failure rate. Again, an incredibly high reliability.
But humans, being human, are sloppy and are prey to their hormones... The primary methods with the highest reliability mean in 1,000 uses there are one pregnancies. But with barrier methods and PERFECT use, there are 5 pregnancies in 100 uses. But because humans are in control of use, not the quality of implantation, that reliability may drop to 15 pregnancies in 100 uses.
The implants, which require no human use component, don't have much of a failure rate. The pill, on the other hand, requires a human to take it every single day at the same time and with the low-dose varieties, within a few hours of every day. And if a woman is taking antibiotics or other medications that interfere with its efficacy, the pill could be rendered ineffective and backup methods will be required.
A woman needs to know how her body and her birth control work. Also, a woman needs to know when she is fertile and that is only about 10 days per month. The mucous method and temperature methods combined require charting and taking body temperature to determine peak fertility days. It can be onerous to do this, but the method is as good as its practitioners. In actual use, it has as high as a 23 percent failure rate. Perfect users can get as high as a 97 percent success rate.
THE BIG BUT with the Billings Method, just as with the temperature method, is extensive CHARTING and Observation of cervical mucous. Most people combine the termperature and Billings Method and the combo method also requires ABSTINENCE for 14 to 18 days per month, or the couple will have to use backup barrier methods.
The great thing about the two methods are they are useful for a couple who WISH to get pregnant as they pinpoint peak fertility almost to the day.
There are many reliable ways to NOT get pregnant. The human factor has to be eliminated because people get carried away when it comes to sex. This is why there has been Plan B and abortion. Because people fail. Yes, there are a few people out there who've NEVER engaged in unsafe sex whether inside a committed relationship or having casual sex.
But pregnancy should never be the punishment for having sex. It is responsible to use backup methods, and though abortion is not a backup method that should be used glibly, sometimes it is called for.
Very little of emergency birth control would EVER BE USED if there were sex education classes for all children starting in fifth grade, right before kids hit puberty. I went to Catholic school and I had it 55 years ago! That there is still controversy over having sex education in schools baffles me. It does NOT encourage people to have sex.
