Well human sexuality is complicated.. I think for this question I should mention Sex, Gender Identification , Sexual Orientation and lastly Sexual Behavior. I think you can understand Sex so I'll explain the rest..
Gender Identification is the gender that you believe/feel you are for example you could be a female in the sex but feel strongly like a man.. that is your gender identification which does not make the girl a lesbian ( she could identify as he but still be into males) .
Sexual Orientation is the people you are attracted to, like in your case shemales. Again it might be different than your sex or you gender identification.
And lastly your Sexual Behavior.. This is what happens when other people get involved and is actually quite different than what your sexual orientation is. This is a bit strange at first but for example think of a priest, his S. O. is heterosexual but because of his religion his S. B. is celibate.
Any one of this can be different.. The most common are
Sex: Female / Male
G. I.: Female / Male
S. O. : Heterosexual
S. B. : Heterosexulal
But for your friend is a bit more like
Sex: Male
G. I.: Male
S. O.: Shemales , Heterosexual
S. B.: Heterosexual.

People like what they like! No need to label it I say. Plus most trabsgenders look very feminine and pretty. Maybe its just a fetish or they're part bi or who knows.. to each their own I say!
I have heard that some people are attracted to the female body, and not the male body, while at the same time, they like penis, more than a vagina. So they seem to have some straight, and gay preferences, but aren't really bisexual either. At least that is what I have heard.
It may also be that they can't bring themselves to admit to their attraction to guys, but find shemales to be less gay, so are more comfortable with it. Another idea is that it could also be that they aren't interested in watching p*rn with a man in it, but still want to see women get screwed by a penis, so turn to shemales as a way to watch lesbian p*rn, with lesbians getting banged by a penis.

i think it has something to do with the "dominating factor." I promise you these guys (well most of them) want to be controlled by the shemale in the relationship or the sexual encounter. And yo... a lot of those shemales look really good. Not gonna lie, the whole penis thing ain't for me (no into that stuff, nothing wrong with that) but i can see how and why some guys have an attraction. Oh yea and guys that are like that, or into that, its usually a p*rn thing.

Yes it's normal behaviour, there is no rule saying what is normal, and if there is, it's discrimination. I would not say he is straight if he is attracted to females and transsexual. It would be a little more accurate to say he's a gynephiliac which is attraction to females and femininity traits.

lets imagine that you date a gorgeous girl with nice body and face. you like her and she is soo sexy. and when the time arrives you see she has a penis instead of vagina! what would you do? continue with her or break up it?
Ohhh boy, besides from have a heart attack, I don't know what I'd do to be honest. It's never occured to me that any girl I have dated or would date could be a guy but I guess if everything was great and she, I mean he was... man, I don't think I could ever date a guy, just doesn't sit right with me

Is it just a p*rn thing? I mean, because I think that it is more appropriately considered "transgender", but in p*rno land it is "shemales". And lots of guys have fantasies that they may not actually want to do in person... I think more guys tend to look at gay or bi male p*rn, than might actually act on it. And then again, I think that a lot of the gurls I've seen in shemale p*rn look much more feminine than the TGs I've seen in real life.
