This Is What A Normal, Healthy, Average Female Body Looks Like

This is what a normal, healthy, average female body looks like.

This is model Katie H. Willcox. She's 5'9" and 165lbs, which puts her BMI index at 24.4. According to that she is just barely within the normal weight range, but still within the normal range. She's not obese, she's not overweight, she's normal. And that doesn't even take into account her pretty nose to the grindstone work out regime, which, if you know anything about BMI, means that it's quite likely she is well within a healthy body fat percentage because of added muscle weight throwing the BMI out.

This Is What A Normal, Healthy, Average Female Body Looks Like

This is yet another model named Katie Green. She's 5'10" and a US size 10. Sure she's bigger than your average model, but she's not even plus size, and slightly smaller than your average woman. Factoring in her height and clothing size, her BMI is probably lower than Katie H. She is still well within what is scientifically considered a normal, healthy size.

This last woman, pictured here (sorry for the link guys the image wasn't the right size or something) is Heidi Ricketson at 5'4" and 150lbs, she does figure competitions. This is her "before" photo where she has bulked on the muscle but hasn't crash dieted the fat off yet. Based on BMI she is slightly in the overweight range but considering she is a body builder this is less applicable. I will consider her, as the other 2, just inside of the normal weight range.

I have chosen 3 very fit, healthy, active and diet concious women who represent the average size of a woman in the US, about a size 12. The models are taller, of course, and well models and the average woman is also not a body builder. But the average woman does sit on the line between being considered normal vs overweight. There really is no health risk associated with this size of a person, especially if the person is like any pictured above, where they keep in good shape, eat well, and have a lot of lean muscle mass.

The GaG Polling

So I asked if these women were skinny (link to GaG question), not expecting anyone to actually agree, but to see how our descriptions of size actually compare to relatively average, relatively healthy size.

It turns out, not terrible lol. Roughly 30% considered one or more of them to be skinny, and 7% considered them to all be fat. The majority of people (55%) considered them not skinny, but did not choose to label them all as fat although the option was there. (Poll percentages are so far as the question is still open).

In the comments while many people did describe them as normal, healthy, and average, some people described them as fat and out of shape. The impression I got from most of the comments was that all of these women were walking a fine invisible line between just right and totally fat and undesirable. The line between normal and overweight. While there were a handful that considered them already past that line only two bothered to comment to the effect that they actually were skinny.

My Two Cents

While I was pleasantly surprised by the actual results, which support that despite media images the preference is still for realistic looking women and most people have a decent sense of what that is, I am still a little disapointed. Not in anything I can really pinpoint, just disapointed. I guess it's better than nothing that our society, or at least our little GaG community, mostly has realistic expectations of womens bodies.

  • Something you didn't take into consideration is ethnicity. BMI scale is rigged for white people. For instance, I found out that since I'm black/native American, my body is designed to carry more fat than a white woman's body. The BMI says that a healthy weight for me is 130 at 5'3, but my doctor and trainer said 145-150 is more ideal, especially if I develop lean muscle. 5'3 and weigh 176, but my white friend is 5'7 and weighs 150, yet we wear the same size everything. She's a B cup, too, and I'm a DD. The BMI scale is complete trash and you should just be comfortable with what you see in the mirror. I only plan on losing 25-30 pounds and that's it. I'm not trying to be a stick.

    • yeah lol I realized what I'd done when some people started commenting about other countries and I was like omg so I'm trying to imagine that all women are white? Lmfao sorry for the massive oversight, however this was a slightly facetious arguments because I actually beleive that BMI is a terrible indicator of size, that size is a terrible indicator of health, and it's probably more natural and healthy to be whatever size you are when you're eating right and being active than to be any particular size.

    • lol, you're fine, wasn't criticizing. If you're white, I can see why it didn't come into consideration because you aren't a minority.

    • Wow I never knew that.

    • Show All
  • But these women always appear to have wide hips. Many petite or skinny girls do not, so they'll always be considered skinny. Just saying.

    • Yeah totally. My argument was a little facetious deliberately exluding other body types, obviously there are lots of genetic variations which make for a wide range of body types.

  • Reading all these comments make me want to shoot myself...

  • I think if there was a poll option for normal/average, a lot of people would have picked that so poll mightn't have been so distorted away from skinny.

  • The normal bodied women of your selection are quite a bit fatter than I am... I'm quite a bit pregnant. I don't think a size 12 is normal for someone below the age of 30.

    • It's the US size average, I don't know what role age plays. It doesn't mean your body is wrong it just means that more people are bigger.

    • That being the normal us size is truly unacceptable. There is nothing normal about that size on a global scale.

    • I did do a minute stretching of the truth, the average does actually fall over the line into the overweight category, and the US in particular has obesity problems, but I did deliberately pick very healthy women who are naturally quite large and presented my case from there. I never advocate for poor health or even stretch that merely by being an 'average' size you are healthy... kind of like how being a skinny size doesn't mean by default that you are healthy...

  • It's estimated that by 2020 41% of men will be obese and a further 40% overweight, while 36% of women will be obese and 32% of will be overweight.

It's also estimated that by 2050, there will be a 23% rise in obesity-related strokes, a 34% rise in obesity-related high blood pressure, a further 44% rise in obesity-related heart disease, and a 98% increase in obesity-related diabetes.

There is already more men who are overweight then healthy and if predictions come to fruition, there will soon be more obese people then overweight.

And here people like you are pointing a finger at 'unrealistic' expectations when it comes to weight... that's fucked up.

    • Who is making these predictions? Based on what data? Where do I advocate that people should be larger than these people (who FYI are considered normal not overweight or obese), or ignore their health?

    • I got the information from a case study done by a professor at oxford university, by a name I cannot remember but you're more then welcome to go look it up... it really shouldn't take you more then 15seconds given the the number of studies done on the subject which all point towards the same statistics give or take a few percentiles. This is the world we live in... a world of fat lazy people who promote body acceptance even when said body is a strain on the health system as well as on the individual.

    • I'm so happy that these people can predict the future! Can they also tell me who I will be marrying, or when I will die?

    • Show All
  • Well, they're close to being overweight. One more burger or hot dog, and they'll turn into overweight.
Why is it that being one step from fat is average and normal? No, it shouldn't be normal, and it's certainly not healthy if they cross the line.
I can understand why they're average... cause we live in a fat society that being almost overweight is considered average.
Being average doesn't mean beautiful, and expecting a woman to be thin and physically fit isn't unreasonable, actually, it's more reasonable than wanting a woman that's one step from being overweight.

    • I think it's healthier to be this size and be active than to obsess over being a particular size smaller than this. And come on, like 5lbs makes a tremendous health difference do you even understand why being overweight or obese is unhealthy?

  • Why would we want to see an average body? Do you get turned on by the average man? Most gals day the hottest men aren't the average, same with women x15

    • I find that individual people have individual tastes, one mans beautiful is another mans ugly. To each their own really.

    • what you commented has nothing to do with what i said. Im talking about hot vs average for the average man and comparing it to women's hot/average. Im saying to be hot you have to be above average

    • u must think a guy wants to bang every girl he comes across lol. You dont HAVE to look like what a man likes, but its sexier.

  • ... Third girl isn't too attractive. The others are all fine though. Not overweight, not skinny.

    I approve of this take.

    • Lol I think I've read you post that on other takes as well.

    • It means I like the fact that this take exists :p

    • It also means that you understand what average is. :)

  • If you gauge your health by where you fall on the BMI index you're doing it wrong.

    • No, I dislike BMI, but many people like to use it as the almightly standard, so I felt that if I made mention of it considering that it supported my points it might prevent completely stupid comments about them being overweight etc etc. That never happened of course but I tried.

  • Gross. Sorry, but that is overweight. I would never abuse my body like these women are doing and try to promote it as healthy.

    • It's actually technically considered normal weight in accordance with accepted health standards, you are technically incorrect calling it overweight. You are also incorrect calling it abuse, as no data supports that this size is damaging to a person's health. It is healthy. That's why I'm promoting it as healthy.

  • They look good. But it's not unrealistic to look better. It's actually getting pretty common to see excessively fit people more and more

  • Honestly thank you so much for making this. I'm tired of people going off of BMI when it doesn't apply to all people and doesn't account for muscle, genetic or usually your frame. And they think that fat is a such a horrible thing. Of course if you have too much of it it'll kill you but it's not horrible. Some people naturally have a little more fat than others because that's where their body wants to naturally be. If you workout, get your heart rate up a couple times a week, eat healthy, don't starve yourself or be on a fad diet, then you're good. Honestly would be better if we took out the entire my health is determined by a number.. It's doing more bad than good.

  • Lovely

  • Its as simple as this. When we are dating early on, we pick women by maximum orgasm potential because our primary purpose in dating when we are young is to secure a steady supply of high quality sex. Don't bullshit me with sentimentality. We wait though the dinner, theater and concerts we paid for to get to What Comes After. Its why guys want the clothes off in the first week, because they feel they are being "used" if "compensation" is not forthcoming. But then we start to grow up some time after age 25 and our standards change. We're looking for character and durability; nolonger a fragile, temperamental, gorgeous snowflake. And a girl who unapologetically displays a little extra avoirdupois likes herself and her life, and will probably like you despite your many imperfections, small pecker and pathetic sexual technique. So Praise The Lard!

    • Lol I actually like this. My focus was mainly to make normal women feel normal. Plus the more society questions the health of a thin image the less likely we are to idealize it which is only going to be a good thing. I think it's no coincidence that once a man hits a more mature age he's probably looking for a larger than a stick woman. It's better for procreating, whereas the slimline thin build is more of a status symbol than anything else.

    • i dont like dinners and theater and have never had sex but very long term relationship. you now what you like you dont speak for others. wow id never have sex in a week or date someone who used their and my value on that happening. pathetic.

    • @Azara you need only read this forum to know what I describe is out there. It is and always has been up to women to control the pace of the game.

  • What's your point? They're average sized women, neither fat nor skinny, just like the average man. I'd rather not be average.

  • excellent take, this is what I was trying to get at with my own poll:

    www.girlsaskguys.com/.../q1934049-are-these-girls-overweight-or-curvy

however, I would like to notice there is a strong difference between the wording in my poll and the wording in your poll.

in your poll, you were only asking if the girls were skinny or fat. obviously the girls you post are not skinny because this is a different body type (girl 3 is also facially unappealing although physically she is not overweight).

you should have asked if the girls were considered to have attractive, curvaceous figures and you would have found different results altogether. in my own poll, the results were still a little disappointing (nearly a third voted 'unattractive, unhealthy' and more than a third thought 'carrying a bit of weight'). Still, the majority of people thought 'healthy and attractive models' so you can see that this is quite a refreshing perspective on the whole.

    • I'd like to note that these girls were also slightly larger than the models you used, so there is nothing much to be pessimistic about really (although GAG is far from an accurate representation of the overall western population).

    • I really wanted to see if people were going to take the view that they were normal and healthy all on their own by asking what was basically a stupid question. I knew people would try to correct it, and in doing so defend their point of view stronger.

    • when you say 'correct it' you talking about me? because I basically agree with you, lol.

  • The second one is a little chubby and the third one looks like a man

  • Katie green was a ride when she was modelling. She was never skinny but perfect curves. That not a 10 dress size. I bought a few dresses for my size 10 girlfriend and she was a lot thinner than that

    • A UK size 14 was a size 10 in the USA the last time I checked.

    • @Shorty1991 I'm from the uk so it's a lot thinner here. I'd say 9 stone

    • Sorry, I don't keep up with models, I though she was American My bad? Lol
