was thomas jefferson a rapist or consensual sex? i think the 2nd but its kinda weird. he interbreeded or had sex with his female slave who was a black woman and they said he was a nice slave owner trying to free them so it was a noble relaetoinship. and als that she liked him and stuff.

It wasn't really casual- it didn't start until AFTER his wife had died, and so far as I know, it was just between the two of them. Of course, she was legally still his slave (and while he couldn't convince Congress to ban slavery outright, he COULD have easily manumitted his own slaves), and would have had no legal recourse if she'd said "no". He might've respected that, but then he might not've.

If his actions make you question how good a person he really was, that's good. Slavery is a terrible evil. But remember, too, that he might have faced more social opprobrium for openly being in a relationship with a black woman who WASN'T his slave than banging one who was- the world was a much crueler and stupider place back then.

The power dynamic between master and slave does not really allow for consensual sex. If she hadn't wanted it, what would she have done? How would she have safely said no in that scenario?

Sure, it's possible she did want it. But to my knowledge, he did not set her up to be able to say no, regardless of whether she wanted it or not.

Its weird man. I'd consider it "partial take advantage rape but in a nice consensual way due to her consent but still rape due to the power dynamic" If she made her choice, she made her choice. We can't rule that out. Black women like to make there own decisions so we gotta keep that in mind to.

Im just saying he is aware she can't say no. He has no way of telling if she actually wants it or not. It seems like, whether or not she wanted it, he was going to have it anyway. He was at the very least willing to be a rapist.
