Others have explained the traditional meaning of "escort" - a woman who can be taken to social events, whose job it is to make the man look good and improve his status with the other people in attendance. A quality escort will be able to fit in with a high-class social event, and talk reasonably about the topics of the day, but may also be comfortable around more "blue collar" folks who drink beer and play darts.

The problem is that out-and-out prostitutes - who only have sex and provide no escorting functions - started using "escort" as a higher-class euphemism for "hooker", and that has confused things, because such women ARE outright hookers, but call themselves escorts, when that term doesn't really apply to them at all.

It's called an "escort" for legal reasons, cause prostitution is illegal in most of the world. Average ones cost $200 an hour. High-end ones cost $500-$1,000 an hour or more (few men go to high-end escorts). Escorts can provide men with sex, but often times, just companionship, friendship, or a fantasy with a loving partner known as GFE (the GirlFriend Experience). Escorts are much classier and dignified than common street prostitutes and Backpage-esque hookers. Unfortunately, many of them (if not most of them) are not heterosexual (aka queer, aka gay), so it is mainly just an acting performance for them.

Escort is a euphemism for prostitute in the United States at least in the context of the question that I think you are asking. There have been escort services where a guy could get a date with a beautiful young lady to take to an event when he didn't have anyone he knew available. This is because it used to be very socially unacceptable for any single gentleman to go to any kind of social event without one. But since that is no longer the case that is no longer an existing category of definition. Today all escorts are prostitutes even the ones who say they are not and therefor escort services are illegal in most of the United States though the risk of arrest is relatively low in most places here.
I don't know why there called escorts. But i do know the clear difference between a prositute and a escort is one is illegal in my country the other not. Cause prositutes have a pimp and this is not allowed. Escorts are self effcient therefore legal.
The whole date thing don't really exist in my country as the term for it. Always confused me when people say Escorts don't do sex or you pay them to date you. Cause it's simply not true sure you could pay to do that as agreed thing i am sure the woman who is paid won't mind doing it. But normally ya just go for a sexual service. I am gonna guess that whole date thing is probably limited to country's with laws that unfavor sex work like america. Since it's kinda a way to advertise your work without been flagged for selling sex, your just selling dates. (Which i am gonna guess lead into sexual stuff but because you didn't pay for that technically and just paid a lot for a date it works) But i could be wrong.
it's basically a prostitute that offers a wider variety of services. some don't even offer sex.
