They are indeed different. A submissive is a person who prefers to put the other person's pleasure before their own and get turned on as much by their partner getting turned on as anything else. Not all submissives are masochists though in my experience a large percentage are even if they don't know it yet.

A masochist is a person who enjoys erotic pain as a major part of their sexual experience. The source of the pain can be any number of things like spanking, rough anal sex, nipple torture, genital torture, etc. Torture here means using the area to create erotic pain.
