What's your take on healthy masturbation? Many believe teens today are trapped in masturbation addiction which affects their mental health?

Superb Opinion

  • Masturbation in itself, in moderation, I don't believe is harmful. I do think that today's teens spend far less time actually out communicating with the opposite sex in real life and spend more time online which can cause social anxiety simply because they have lack of practice in communication. Also I think porn, which often goes along with masturbation, can be very addictive. A lot of it unless homemade, is pretty unrealistic compared to real world sex, so it can give people the wrong expectations. Also some people especially when young move gradually to harder types of fetish porn and after time simply can't get off on regular sex. I had a porn addiction and see that in myself. I imagine the world was much simpler before the internet, when porn wasn't as accessible and teens actually had to talk on the phone or meet in real life.

Most Helpful Guy

  • Growing up there were always these articles in tabloids about some doctor saying it was healthy.

I have never felt any health benefit. It seems to sap my energy and leave me feeling worse.

  • As long as masturbation isn’t harming you or bringing you distress/ making you neglect your obligations and social life, it is just fine and perfectly healthy. Masturbation has many health benefits, including reducing the risk of prostate cancer for men.

  • It is a normal aspect of life. We are sexual beings.
I have yet to meet a young man who has never masturbated. All of my male friends masturbated when growing up. Some more, some less, some were struggling to quit, but all of them did at least once in a while.

  • It's healthy. The people you mentioned are ignorant, usually religious fundamentalists. There's no science supporting such claims.

    • There is a ton of anecdotal testimony, though. I figure if you're forever spinning your wheels, it's kinda problematic. If you're able to get into real relationship with real women but also pleasure yourself on the side, that is probably okay. I get that there are religious nuts who hate people who nut, but I feel like that means the porn industry can always just point to that and dismiss all concerns. Like if tobacco companies accused anyone with health concerns of being a miserable fundamentalist prude.

    • @Cheapskate Anecdotal testimony is worthless. THERE IS NO DATA indicating that regular masturbation is unhealthy. The data we have indicates the opposite.

    • Then show me the data, dude. Who was in the control group? Monks? Anecdotal data is not worthless, it should be a starting point for further investigation. When countless men around the world complain that masturbation and porn are ruining their lives, that they are addicted to both, etc. I don't want a scientific establishment that just smugly puts it down to religious shame. I want a bare minimum of scientific curiousity for my taxes.

  • Everything is good in moderation

  • I think everyone is human and everyone has their own mature way of living their lives. As a healthy adult, I just look after myself, just like food, diet, exercise, income, etc

  • Young people have been trapped in masturbation addiction since the dawn of time.

  • I think way too many young males are, if not addicted, problematically abusing doing that And it is affecting their mental health negatively. The men have zero social skills and are paralyzed with anxiety leading to an epidemic of loneliness and masturbation as it's outlet. I don't know about females. They seem much more self-assured and more private about it. Just the same, it seems any stigma regarding toys has completely evaporated.
