Men do. That is part cultural but it is also biological evolution at work.

Men are programmed - so to speak - to have sex with as many women as possible. The idea being to perpetuate their genetic line and spread their DNA as far as possible in an evolutionary competition with other males. Hence, in part, why men have so many sperm

Women, on the other hand, also have an instinct for sex, but it plays itself out differently. Women can normally only carry one baby at a time and it is, in evolutionary terms, rather costly in terms of time and energy. So women are looking for one man who can sire healthy offspring, and once the baby is born find food for mom and baby and ward off rival males and predators.

It is from this evolutionary process that the difference between men and women is born when it comes to sex. Now having said that, all sorts of individual psychological, social, cultural and other factors come into play, so it is not a hard and fast answer.

Yet overall - and the data supports this - men will tend to have more sexual partners than women. This, I add, as a man who has had seven partners and have fathered four children out of wedlock, so I know whereof I speak.

So on average we of course net the same. Simply because if we only count different sex pairings, every pairing includes men and women. Open relationships and polygamy might offset it a bit but not much.

Now what I assume you are interested in is a representative average, such as a mode. So basically what is correct most of the time. This ignores a lot of the extremes.

And if that is what you want, women undoubtedly have more partners. If you grabbed 1000 men and women and all answered honestly, the women would generally have had more partners.

This is by now a rather tiresome rethoric about how the majority of women go for a relative minority of men. As tiring and old as that is getting it is still mostly true, at least statistically.

I don’t think this goes by gender - I do think men are obviously more judgmental when it comes to this though. A guy I know said he hates a girl because she looks like she has a high body count when in reality she has a body count of 1 person.
