Why can't shorter men donate sperm at banks?

My friend told me he wanted to donate but got refused because he is 5'4. isn't that discrimination? Why do they refused someone healthy for these reasons?

  • I did some research into this.

    I believe the minimum height requirement for men in order to qualify as a sperm donor is 5'9".

    It's incredibly unfair, but women don't want the sperm of short men.
    At least in the context of a sperm bank.

    Think of this way: if you were a grocery, would you want to stock your shelves and pay for items that you know will NOT sell?

    Is it fair that many women in real life have no interest in going out with short men? No.

    Is is fair that almost every woman looking for a sperm donor completely exclude short men? No.

    Is it fair that short men can do absolutely nothing about their height? No.

    But, you can understand where the sperm bank is coming from.

    • yeah as someone else said, they just want to make money and sell desirable sperm, it makes sense, its really unfair tho, but I suppose government dont want to intervene into it.

    • There are other standards as well. For example, being white is incredibly desirable. Having at least a Bachelor's degree is also very desirable. As private enterprises, sperm banks can set their own criteria - which is almost always determined by the market, which would be what women want from a sperm donor.

    • yeah I suppose most buyers want the best quality possible considering the cost. It does makes sense they are picky as it seems quite competitive as a market.

  • It's the same reason as why ugly people generally don't become movie/TV stars, or why short or fat women can't be runway models.

    People won't go to movies or watch TV with ugly people, and the fashion industry doesn't want short or fat women on the runway. Likewise, when women go to a sperm bank, they almost universally want sperm only from TALL men.

    Sperm banks are simply meeting the market's demand. There's no money in short men's sperm, nor in guys who are predisposed to diseases, or have mental health issues.

    • yeah I can understand, but I'm surprised there would be no demand at all for it, some people probably want children of similar height

  • Because most women prefer tall guys just like most men prefer shorter women. They have all kinds of statistics at those places. My guess is that nobody pic's the sperm of a guy that is 5' 4".

    • I feel like shorter parents would pick shorter sperm to get child their size, but I could be wrong

  • It is discrimination, but, at the same time, there is only so much space to store the donation and, if no women are selecting the sperm of men who are 5' 4" tall, then the donation is doing nothing but taking up valuable space in the sperm bank - space that could be used for the donation from a man who is more desirable to the female clientèle.

    • thanks for your answer, it makes sense they would want to buy sperm that would makes money and sell, but would a shorter men really not sell well? or not sell as much as a taller men sperm. There might be demand for shorter men.

    • There really isn't a demand for shorter men. The facts of life are that, on average, women desire men taller than them and men desire women shorter than them. It's because of instinctive feelings of security. Women feel more secure with taller men and men feel less threatened by women shorter than them. There's a difference between what you will settle for in the dating world and what you are buying like at a sperm bank. When you buy, you are more discriminating and demanding in what you want. So, while a woman might get to know and accept a shorter man for dating and even marriage because she got to know his personality, when she's "shopping" for a father or her child, she doesn't know his personality and can only go by attributes listed in the sperm bank catalog. In that case, she'll go with taller men.

  • I know I can't donate sperm because a) Im 16 and b) My mum has psoriasis which is a hereditary skin condition that I have the recessive gene for and if the woman were to also have the same recessive gene there would be like a 25% chance the child would get the dominant gene.

  • They need selected sperms not random, only take those which client wants, they have some rules.

    Ya know what really feels like crap? Sperm donors are given a cup and some attitude by nurse Gretchen then get shoved in a closet. Egg donors get to talk to friendly doctors and get paid thousand of dollars.

    • I think sperm banks are just more competitive, sperm is easily available compare to eggs. but its indeed really rude they do that.
