Why do American movies/shows never show vulvas?

You see dicks everywhere, but vulvas are never shown, especially not shaved ones.

There were a bunch of dicks shown in Euphoria for example. Do men not like seeing vulvas?

  • The rules that are in place in the US (and Crown countries such as the UK, Canada, and Australia) were made in the 1950s and 60s by censorship boards made up of men in their 60s and 70s. They more-or-less all set the same rules: a non-sexual depiction of a flaccid penis or a "neat" vulva (defined as the labia minora not being visible when standing upright) was allowable, but that erect penises or visible labia minora were inherently sexual and subject to hardcore pornography restrictions in distribution and exhibition. And these rules haven't been addressed since.

This is one of the reasons why women became obsessed with visible inner labia in the late 90s and 2000s, and why labiaplasties skyrocketed. In the mid-90s, shaving bald or Brazilian waxing became common and accepted - starting in porn (because producers found that shaved/waxed women attracted more sales than hairy ones) and propagating out into the general population. This soon started to affect even softcore porn mags like Playboy. Prior to this time, women tended to trim, but shaving or waxing was rare, and so magazines would simply airbrush in some extra "hair" to cover any exposed labia, and problem solved - no further restrictions. But when shaving became common, you could no longer hide labia with "extra pubic hair" airbrushing. Right about that time, a new computer photo editing program called Photoshop was beginning to get popular, and that became the solution.

Porn magazines, instead of airbrushing in hair onto film prints, started digitally editing vulvas, turning all vulvas into "innies" so that they wouldn't face any distribution restrictions, which would have greatly affected sales. This had the side effect of people believing that all women had "innie" vulvas, when most women have "outies", and so panicked women were calling plastic surgeons to schedule labiaplasties so that they looked more like these Playboy girls. Even some hardcore porn girls went under the knife in the 2000s. All because of some stupid rules from the 50s and 60s by stodgy old men.

Movies faced similar restrictions. A movie slapped with an NC-17 rating will tend to only earn about 1/10 of a similar R-rated movie, because of the restrictions and the stigma that comes with such a rating. Few studios and directors are willing to lose all that money - which is enough to derail entire careers - so studios typically avoid NC-17 ratings at all costs, with most NC-17 movies being indie productions with small budgets that have a better chance at at least recouping the original investment.

    • You’re saying that the outer labia is allowed to be seen even shaved without getting an NC-17 rating?

    • Technically, yes, in a "non-sexual setting". So, there was a 70's movie called Night Moves with Gene Hackman and a young Melanie Griffith - who was actually underage during principle photography, and was brought back a year later, after she turned 18, to do some nude scenes. They weren't sexual - she was out on a boat and stripped her clothes off to go swimming/diving - but she got naked. Now, being the 70s, she had a bush, so there were no vulva issues, but if that scene was shot today, they could technically show a BRIEF shot of an "innie" vulva without triggering an NC-17. For whatever brain-dead reason, the censorship boards decided that visible inner labia was "vulgar" and would automatically be treated as hardcore porn, but that a "neat" vulva (with no visible inner labia) was acceptable in non-sexual settings for a very brief time. Film studios rarely push the issue - they don't want to take the risk, but it happens occasionally. There was a Robert Altman movie called Short Cuts, starring Julianne Moore - a natural redhead - who has no problem getting naked for a role - and in the movie, she is bottomless for a solid few seconds - arguing with her "husband" Matthew Modine - and her red bush doesn't really cover her vulva completely - you can see what's going on down there. So, yeah, on rare occasions, it happens, but almost always with indie movies like Short Cuts rather than studio films. Studios were less conservative in the 1970s, which is how movies like Night Moves got made.

    • Then why aren’t more innie vulvas shown at least from the front, but flaccid dicks are always shown?

  • Watch the films "Nurse" and "Blue is the Warmest Color". There is a THIRD one but right now can't remember the name. It is about a girl, 18 years old who loves her doctor, father. She wants him to fuck her but he won't, but she does get him to feel her breast. In one scene her friend/tutor, walks into her bedroom and she is sitting on the bed, nude, with her legs open showing her labia, slit, with blond hair down the lips.
If you were not ANON, I would post it to your message board later, when I see it on Amazon again.

In the other one, "Nurse" the woman sleeps over with another nurse, after a night out, where she get her friend drunk and watches a stranger fuck her. In the 'morning after' scene she walks through the kitchen with her labia showing between her legs.

In Blue... the two girls are lesbians and they eat each other out a lot, and if you stop the film, you can plainly see both of their labia, right before ones mouth closes on them.

    • P. S. Oops, I think only one of these, the one I can't remember was an American film.

    • P. S. The movie I could not remember is called: "Punch" and is on Amazon Prime. It plainly shows her hair enclosed labia, sitting on her bed.

    • I already know they show them with hair. I said shaved.

  • I also wondered that, if they're gonna do a nude scene why not just go all the way, why are certain parts hidden on purpose? But dicks in most movies and series American or not are hidden too I think, so both are rare. Maybe because they are more intimate parts than just boobs and ass, the actors might not want to expose themselves all the way like that just for making a film, and they shouldn't have to.

  • Do you think it’s unfair? 😁 or you prefer it this way?

    • I think it’s unfair.

    • Tell me what u think the reason is.

    • Well it’s your right to feel that it’s unfair. But the reason could be anything, it could be that they don’t want to insult a woman by showing her private parts, and it could be that they consider it so erotic 🤷… it really can be anything. More than that for me , neither showing man or woman’s private part is accepted. There’s absolutely no meaning on showing that except that they are just want people to be more concerned about sex than anything else, or that they’re just shooting porn videos which is 💯 made for sexual interactions. It’s immoral to show it in general and it shows that media is nonsense and just wanting people to no longer care about what’s important for us.

  • I wish they would show more of both

    • They never show dicks that are hard however!

    • Are u bi?

    • Not at all... just stating a fact.

  • It's all down to classifications there are rules as to what can be seen for a specific classification.

Eg in the UK if you are watching an 18 rated film you can see vagina but no penetration and only the early stages of a male erection i. e. just starting to get hard but pointing at the ground. You can suggest penetration but you see nothing

Any more would be classed as R18 which is porn.

For stuff in the US you need to do some googling to find out what the limits to your 18 equivalent certification is

  • Apparently, you haven't seen "Basic Instinct" and the interrogation scene.

    • That’s literally the only one. There’s a whole list of movies with dicks in them.

    • Well, yes, there are plenty of Republicans in Hollywood...

  • I don't know what kind of film or shows you're watching, but I can't say I have ever seen a dick in a normal film or TV show.

  • Got me! I think they're really cute! There WAS a shaved one shown close up in a Jeff Goldblum movie back in the `80's but, it was only on screen for about 3 seconds.
They're just sexy pink flowers! What's wrong with seeing that?

  • Because Americans are a bunch of prudes who get their panties in a bunch if they see a girl without panties , or even worse, a dick. But they really have no problem with people getting murdered right and left.

  • There are Vulvas in films

    • Nope

    • There are

    • No, just one and barely.

  • I dunno I only seen like 3 movies in my life, I don't know they showed dicks either. I thought they censor any genitals

  • Seeing boobs is enough for me, but I see your point.

    • It could also be a request from the actresses to not show vulvas.

  • Clearly you and I have very different tastes in media. lol I’ve never seen a movie or show that showed any private parts.

  • I don't know I would like to see vulvas on television please

  • I remember in the movie "The Dreamers" there was a lingering closeup
of Eva Green's pussy lips. That is the most mainstream movie I can
think of. She wasn't a big star back then though (2003)

    • That was also a French movie. VERY different standards there.

    • @MrOracle Maybe French made but they spoke English.

  • It’s our thing. Mens butts, womens side boob and butts can still be PG 13. Nips is R. Any bush, it’s very R…

I actually haven’t seen any recent “unrated” or nc-17 ratings on recent movies.

  • Umm. Why?

  • I don't see dicks everywhere, particularly not in American movies. Now French movies on the other hand...

    • Definitely more than u see vulvas.

    • Do French movies show bare vulvas a lot too or just dicks?

  • It's a new thing actually, now they are focusing more on male nudity comparing to the past where they used to focus more on the female nudity, and the reason they show women unshaven is to cover up the vulvas, so even though they are nude, you still can't see much, but boobs still are making generous appearances.

    • U have no idea what you’re taking about.

    • excuse me?

  • just watch porn... i see a lot on there ;)

  • It is considered pornography, I love vulva's too

  • Euphoria's targeted audience is just teenage girls who think it's a cool act.

    • Nah, I think the writer is obsessed with dicks. Literally 80% of the guys in that show are made out to be gay.

    • Netflix in a nutshell, as if most people were gays and not straight, is having LGBTQ relationships just some kinda latest fashion nowadays?

    • Not many females are made to be lesbian though. I think many men are just gay.
