It's a combination of a lack of morals, and often laziness (in men, not wanting to work to become more of what women want, and in women, choosing fast money rather than working a conventional job). Most don't understand or acknowledge the costs - emotional and otherwise - that these choices are likely to bring them.

There's also the drug angle. Drug addicts usually can't keep a regular job, and need to make money to pay for their drugs. Male drug addicts tend to be thieves or even robbers, while women tend to hook.

There are always going to be some people who take the easy way out - easy in the moment, even if the long-term cost is high. One of the reasons that most lower-class people stay in the lower class is because they live strictly in the moment - they struggle to mentally process time, and so they can't delay gratification - such as, to save up money for something - or create a plan for the future. This makes them unable to understand and evaluate the long-term costs of their choices - they only know what they want RIGHT NOW. This is why they'll blow a great job, or commit a crime right in front of police where they'll be easily caught.
