The pill is only as reliable you are a reliably using it. Then it is very reliable, about as much as a condom. check the pearl-index about contraception, it tells you more.
But there are other methods of contraception, which might suit you better. Some people can't take the pill.
But first and foremost, you both should get checked for STIs.
It's like asking why people don't like to shower with their clothes on, lol. The pill should be reliable enough, but there are other ways to prevent pregnancy as well than just condoms or pills.

I don't feel jack shit with a condom on. I've tried so many brands, different shapes, different sizes, all I get is a massive boner killer and a real risk of losing it.
If I am in a new, serious relationship, I'll say we should both get a new STD test done so we know that's safe, get some other form of birth control, and then enjoy not having to fiddle around with condoms, putting them on, making sure they stay on, etc etc etc.
Any condom, by the nature that it serves as a barrier, reduces feeling and sensation for him. How much varies with the guy and the condom. Bareback feels amazing. I've had a vasectomy so my only concern is disease so I make it a practice to exchange current STD screen results with a woman before we have sex.
Bottom line: bareback is light years better, IMHO.

Far (far) better sensation. Sex with a condom is like a shower with a raincoat on.
For me they are awkward and never fit correctly so better off without. Better sensation without them too.
It feels SO much better without one. My gf also says that it feels better for her as well going without one.
It does feel a lot better without, if you're not used to it you bust much faster! You gotta glove up with somebody new though. Personally before having unprotected sex in a long term relationship it puts my mind at ease to both go and get checked out, she needs to be trustworthy too with regards to the birth control!!!
